The NAATI CCL Punjabi Vocabulary Master List

Every CCL vocabulary domain in one place: what each one covers, the highest-value terms in accurate Gurmukhi, the single mistake it reliably produces, and where to go for the full 500+ word list.

Twelve vocabulary guides live on this site, and until now nothing pulled them into one place. This page is that place: what each domain covers in the NAATI CCL test, the highest-value terms in accurate Gurmukhi, the single mistake each domain reliably produces, and where to go for the full list. Read it top to bottom once, then use it as the map back to whichever guide you actually need.

Key takeaways
  • The CCL draws its two dialogues from a mix of everyday domains — you can't predict which ones, so breadth across all twelve beats depth in one.
  • Every term below is copied exactly from its full domain guide — no new Punjabi was composed for this page.
  • Each domain has one recurring mistake that costs more marks than a missing word ever does — usually a number, a register mismatch, or a false friend.
  • Spaced repetition and active recall beat re-reading a list — see the learning-method section before you start memorising anything.

How to use this page

Each domain below follows the same shape: what it covers in a real CCL dialogue, the 8 to 10 terms worth knowing cold, the one mistake that domain reliably produces, and a link to the full guide plus the matching glossary where one exists. Skim the domains you feel solid on; slow down on the ones where a term surprises you.

Health & medical

The single most common CCL topic: a GP visit, a hospital admission, a medication conversation. The register is a patient's everyday language, not a doctor's textbook.

The full medical vocabulary guide covers symptoms, body parts, conditions, medication and clinic admin in depth, and the health & medical glossary has the complete term list with audio.

Court proceedings, police matters and formal legal processes. Punjabi legal register sits closer to English legal register than most domains — many terms are borrowed or closely parallel.

The full legal vocabulary guide and the legal & tenancy glossary cover the rest, including housing-related legal terms.

Banking & finance

Bank accounts, loans and everyday money conversations. This is also the domain with the CCL's best-known false friend.

EnglishPunjabiPronunciation

The full banking & finance guide and the banking glossary cover accounts, loans and consumer terms together — see also the false friend itself in the full false-friends guide.

Education & school

Parent-teacher conversations, enrolment and school admin — a common, low-drama domain that still trips people up on specific nouns.

Employment & Centrelink

Workplace conversations and Centrelink payments — two topics that share a bureaucratic register a casual conversation doesn't prepare you for.

Housing & tenancy

Renting, bills and disputes with a landlord or agent — vocabulary that leans on precise timeframes more than any other domain.

The full housing & tenancy guide sits inside the legal & tenancy glossary on this site, since tenancy law and general legal vocabulary overlap heavily.

Immigration

Visas, settlement paperwork and government correspondence — dense with proper nouns and category names that shouldn't be translated freely.

Consumer & shopping

The full consumer & shopping guide sits inside the banking glossary on this site, since consumer transactions and everyday finance share most of their vocabulary.

Transport & driving

Licences, fines and accidents — a domain that's unusually number-heavy: demerit points, fine amounts, dates.

How to actually learn 500+ terms

Twelve domains at 30–50 terms each is 500-plus words, and almost nobody retains that from reading lists once. Three habits actually work.

  • Spaced repetition, not one long cram.Review a term right before you'd otherwise forget it — a few minutes spread across many days beats one long session the week before.
  • Active recall, both directions. Look at the English and produce the Punjabi from memory; then cover the Punjabi and produce the English. Recognising a word is a much weaker skill than producing it, and the test only ever asks you to produce it.
  • Terms inside sentences, not in isolation. A word you can name in a list and a word you can deploy correctly inside a fast-moving sentence are not the same skill. Practise vocabulary embedded in short dialogues, not as flashcard singles only.

For the foundational words that cut across every domain rather than belonging to one, the 100 essential Punjabi words guide and the essential interpreting phrases guide are worth learning before or alongside the domain lists above — and numbers, dates and money deserves its own dedicated drilling, because every domain above leans on it constantly.

The final fortnight

With two weeks left, stop adding new domains and start consolidating. Rotate through all twelve above in both directions rather than deep-diving one; sit at least two full mock dialogues per domain you feel weakest in; and specifically re-read the false-friends guide once more in the final week, because false friends are the one vocabulary error that survives otherwise-strong preparation — they feel correct right up until they cost you the mark.

Quick check

🧠 Quick check
1. Which is the correct everyday Punjabi word for the interest a bank charges?
2. What's the safest approach to a Centrelink or NDIS-style program name?
3. What's the most effective way to learn 500+ vocabulary terms?
TL;DR
Twelve domains cover the CCL's real vocabulary range: health, legal, banking, education, employment/Centrelink, housing, immigration, social services, consumer, transport, emergency and mental health. Learn the high-value terms in each with spaced repetition and active recall in both directions, prioritise whichever domain feels weakest rather than the one you like most, and spend the final fortnight consolidating across all twelve rather than deep-diving one. Every Gurmukhi term on this page links back to its full domain guide.

Frequently asked questions

There's no official word count, but a well-prepared candidate typically knows several hundred high-frequency terms across the test's common domains — health, legal, banking, Centrelink, housing, immigration and a handful of others — in both directions (English to Punjabi and Punjabi to English). Breadth across domains matters more than depth in any one of them, because you can't predict which domain your dialogue will use.
