How this mock test is scored

NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.

Accuracy of information

Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.

Language quality and delivery

Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.

The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant business & employment dialogue cannot rescue a weak housing & property one. How CCL scoring really works.

Your brief. Mr Dhaliwal hurt his lower back lifting cartons at a distribution warehouse in Melbourne. He has come in to meet the claims adviser at the WorkCover agent handling his claim. She has his incident report and his doctor's certificate of capacity, and she must explain his suitable duties, what his weekly payments will be now and after thirteen weeks, and the fact that lodging a claim cannot lawfully cost him his job.

    Where marks go here: The conditional "if I cannot work full hours" is often flattened into a flat statement that he cannot work. Keep the if-clause, keep the six hundred a week, and keep the fear as fear rather than upgrading it into an accusation that the boss has already sacked him.

"From the fourteenth week" and "after thirteen weeks" describe the same boundary, so if you say "after fourteen weeks" you have moved it. Losing the fifty two week protection, or downgrading "cannot dismiss you" to "should not", costs the legal point outright.

    Where marks go here: Two different weekdays close the dialogue, Thursday for the certificate and Monday for the return to duties, and tired candidates swap them. "ਸੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਾਹ ਆਇਆ" is an idiom for relief; rendering it literally as breathing produces nonsense in English.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • WorkCover has no equivalent in Punjab, where an injured labourer usually negotiates with the employer directly. Clients often assume the claims adviser works for the boss, so keep her self-introduction precise rather than reducing her to ਕੰਪਨੀ ਵਾਲੇ.
  • Use ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout for both speakers. A worried client may slide into very informal speech about his boss; the interpreter matches the meaning and the force, but keeps the respectful pronoun the professional relationship calls for.
  • Many Punjabi-speaking workers believe that claiming compensation marks them as a troublemaker and quietly costs them shifts. When the adviser states the fifty two week protection, render it as a legal prohibition, not as encouragement, because that distinction is exactly what the client needs to hear.

Your brief. A new property manager phones Mrs Sandhu, who rents a two bedroom townhouse in Melbourne's north, to arrange the routine inspection due this month. Mrs Sandhu uses the call to raise the mould in the bathroom she has already reported twice, to ask whether her daughter may keep a small dog, and to check what she has heard about a rent increase. Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • A phone greeting of ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ is the natural Punjabi equivalent of a professional good morning, and it should be returned to plain English rather than transliterated when the tenant uses it.
  • Keeping a dog inside the house is uncommon in many Punjabi households, and a client may sound apologetic when asking. Interpret the request neutrally; the apologetic framing is the client's, and it is not the interpreter's job to add or remove it.
  • Australian tenancy law gives a tenant enforceable rights against the person who collects the rent, which surprises clients used to an informal arrangement with a landlord. Consumer Affairs Victoria and VCAT are the named bodies here and both stay in English.

Questions about this mock test

Does the NAATI CCL test really cover workers compensation?
Yes. Business and employment is one of the listed CCL domains, and a WorkCover conversation is a natural fit for it: a claims adviser, a certificate of capacity, suitable duties and weekly payments. The vocabulary is administrative rather than medical, and the marks sit on percentages, dates and conditions.
How do I interpret a percentage step-down without losing marks?
Say the boundary and the two rates as three separate pieces of information: ninety five per cent, for the first thirteen weeks, then eighty per cent. If you compress it into "the payments drop after a while", you lose the percentages and the thirteen weeks together, which on this paper is several marks from a single segment.
Is mould in a rental property an urgent repair in Australia?
In Victoria, mould or damp caused by or related to the building structure is on the statutory list of urgent repairs, which is exactly why this dialogue turns on it. That is why the property manager corrects her own fourteen day answer: the classification changes the deadline from fourteen days to an immediate response.
How much notice must a property manager give before a routine inspection?
In Victoria the rental provider must give at least seven days written notice for a general inspection, and may not inspect more than once every six months. Candidates who say "a week's notice" have interpreted the length correctly but dropped the written requirement, which is a separate scoreable point.
Should I say WorkCover and VCAT in English during the test?
Yes. Institution and scheme names stay in English because that is what a real client would see on the letter in front of them. Punjabi speakers in Australia say WorkCover, VCAT and Consumer Affairs Victoria as they are, and inventing a Punjabi translation makes the answer less useful, not more faithful.
This paper has two different fourteen day rules. Is that a trick?
It is deliberate, and it is also realistic, because a real rental conversation moves between repair timeframes and pet consent timeframes in the same call. The skill being tested is holding two identical numbers with different owners and different consequences, and attaching each one to the right obligation.
