Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 2: Emergency Department and a Bond Claim
We built this paper around the two things that break intermediate candidates: clinical vocabulary that has to survive a fast, frightened conversation, and a legal process with dates and dollar figures that must land to the cent. Sit both dialogues, tick your own key points, and you will know within twenty minutes whether your weakness is terminology or numbers.
What this paper is built to expose
Intermediate — institutional language and multi-part answers. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.
- 1carrying drug names and doses (perindopril, five milligrams) through without substituting a generic word for medicine
- 2keeping two clinical timeframes apart: seen within ten minutes, troponin repeated at about eleven tonight
- 3rendering the modal difference between you may dispute the claim and you must apply by the nineteenth
- 4holding four separate dollar figures across one dialogue without rounding or merging any of them
- 5interpreting the legal distinction between fair wear and tear and damage instead of paraphrasing it away
Sit the test
Model answers stay hidden until each dialogue is finished. Afterwards you mark yourself against 87 individual information units and the same 36-plus-9 split NAATI uses. The full transcript is further down the page whenever you want it — but read it before you sit, and the number stops meaning anything.
16 segments. Two dialogues. One take.
This runner keeps every model answer hidden until you finish a dialogue — the full transcript is further down the page, and reading it first is the one thing that makes your score meaningless. Interpret every segment out loud, as if someone is waiting for the meaning. Then mark yourself against the real criteria: 36 marks for accuracy, 9 for language quality, per dialogue.
Free, no account, nothing to install. Your score is saved on this device only.
Before you start
- Speak, do not think itInterpreting silently is a different skill from producing sound under pressure.
- Do not pause the segmentThe real test does not wait. Pausing turns a measurement into a rehearsal.
- Record yourself if you canYour phone's voice memo app is enough. It is the only way to hear your own hesitations.
- Mark harshlyAn assessor who has never met you certainly will.
How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.
The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant health & medical dialogue cannot rescue a weak housing & property one. How CCL scoring really works.

Emergency Department: Chest Pain and an Overnight Admission
Your brief. A Punjabi-speaking man in his sixties has walked into the emergency department of a public hospital in Melbourne at about seven in the evening with chest pain and shortness of breath. You interpret first for the triage nurse, then for the emergency doctor, as the ECG and blood results come back and a decision is made about whether he goes home or stays.
Speakers: Triage nurse and emergency doctor (English) and Mr Sandhu, a 63-year-old man with chest pain (Punjabi). You interpret for both.
- 1. Triage nurseEnglish Punjabi36 words
I am the triage nurse. Tell me what brought you in tonight. When did the chest pain start, what does it feel like, and does it spread anywhere else, such as into your arm or jaw?
Model interpretation
main triage nurse haan. dasso tusin ajj raat kiun aaye ho. chhaati da dard kadon shuru hoya, kiho jiha lagda hai, ate ki ih kite hor vi jaanda hai, jiven baanh jaan jabaarhe vall?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- speaker identifies herself as the triage nurse
- asks when the chest pain started
- asks what the pain feels like
- asks whether the pain spreads elsewhere
- names two places: the arm or the jaw
Terms in this segment- triage nurse — ਟ੍ਰਾਈਏਜ ਨਰਸ triage nurse
Where marks go here: Candidates render three separate questions as one vague "tell me about your pain". When and what it feels like and where it spreads are three scoreable units, and "jaw" is the one most often dropped because ਜਬਾੜਾ is unfamiliar.
- 2. Mr SandhuPunjabi English34 words
dard dupahir do vaje de kareeb shuru hoya, jadon main paurhian charh riha si. chhaati de vichkaar bhaari dabaa jiha lagda hai, te ih khabbi baanh vall jaanda hai. mera saah vi charhda hai.
Model interpretationThe pain started at about two in the afternoon, while I was walking up the stairs. It feels like a heavy pressure in the middle of my chest, and it travels down my left arm. I also get short of breath.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- started about two in the afternoon
- started while climbing stairs, on exertion
- heavy pressure, not a sharp pain
- located in the middle of the chest
- spreads to the left arm specifically
- also short of breath
Terms in this segment- heavy pressure — ਭਾਰੀ ਦਬਾਅ bhaari dabaa
- stairs — ਪੌੜੀਆਂ paurhian
- to get short of breath — ਸਾਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਨਾ saah charhna
Where marks go here: "ਭਾਰੀ ਦਬਾਅ" is pressure or heaviness, not a stabbing pain; calling it sharp changes the clinical picture and loses the mark. ਖੱਬੀ (left) must survive: "it goes to my arm" drops the side the doctor is asking about.
- 3. Triage nurseEnglish Punjabi36 words
I have given you a triage category two, which means a doctor should aim to see you within ten minutes. We will do an ECG straight away. Please do not eat or drink anything for now.
main tuhanu triage category do ditti hai, jis da matlab hai ki daakatar das mintaan de andar tuhanu dekhan di koshish karega. asin hune ECG karaange. filhaal kujh khaana jaan peena nahin hai.
What must survive (4 marks of information)- triage category two, not one or three
- a doctor should aim to see him within ten minutes
- an ECG will be done straight away
- nothing to eat or drink for now
Terms in this segment- triage category two — ਟ੍ਰਾਈਏਜ ਕੈਟੇਗਰੀ ਦੋ triage category do
- ECG — ECG (ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਬਿਜਲਈ ਜਾਂਚ) ECG
- for now / at present — ਫ਼ਿਲਹਾਲ filhaal
Where marks go here: "Should aim to see you" is a target, and candidates upgrade it to a guarantee ("ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦਸ ਮਿੰਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਵੇਗਾ"). That is a hedge lost and a false promise made to a frightened patient, which assessors mark down twice.
- 4. Mr SandhuPunjabi English38 words
main bladd preshar di goli lainda haan, perindopril panj milligram, har savere, te ajj vi layi si. mainu pahilan kade dil di takleef nahin hoyi. das mint ton vadh taan nahin laggega? meri dhee baahar udeek rahi hai.
Model interpretationI take a blood pressure tablet, perindopril five milligrams, every morning, and I took it today as well. I have never had any heart trouble before. It won't be more than ten minutes, will it? My daughter is waiting outside.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- takes a blood pressure tablet
- the drug is perindopril
- the dose is five milligrams
- taken every morning, and taken today
- no previous heart trouble
- daughter is waiting outside
Terms in this segment- blood pressure — ਬਲੱਡ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ਼ਰ bladd preshar
Where marks go here: The drug name is a proper noun and must be carried, not replaced by "a tablet for pressure". Note the two separate facts hidden in one clause: he takes it every morning AND he took it today. Assessors tick those separately.
- 5. Dr NguyenEnglish Punjabi39 words
I am Doctor Nguyen. Your first ECG does not show a heart attack, but that alone is not enough to send you home. We have taken blood to measure troponin, a protein the heart releases when muscle is damaged.
main Doctor Nguyen haan. tuhadi pahili ECG vich dil da daura nahin disda, par sirf is de aadhaar utte tuhanu ghar bhejna kaafi nahin hai. asin troponin layi khoon lia hai, ih ikk protein hai jo dil di maaspeshi kharaab hon utte nikalda hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- the doctor's name is Nguyen
- the first ECG does not show a heart attack
- that result alone is not enough to send him home
- blood has been taken to measure troponin
- troponin is a protein released by the heart
- it is released when heart muscle is damaged
Terms in this segment- troponin — ਟ੍ਰੋਪੋਨਿਨ troponin
Where marks go here: "Does not show a heart attack" is not "you have not had a heart attack"; upgrading the negative finding to an all-clear is the single most costly error in this dialogue. The word troponin must be reproduced, not softened to "a special test".
- 6. Mr SandhuPunjabi English36 words
mere pita ji di maut athvanja saal di umar vich dil de daure naal hoyi si, is layi main daria hoya haan. je pahila test theek aa jaave, ki main ajj raat ghar jaa sakda haan?
Model interpretationMy father died of a heart attack at the age of fifty eight, so I am frightened. If the first test comes back normal, can I go home tonight?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- his father died of a heart attack
- his father was fifty eight at the time
- he says he is frightened
- conditional: if the first test is normal
- asks whether he can go home tonight
Terms in this segment- father — ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ pita ji
- frightened — ਡਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ daria hoya
- fifty eight — ਅਠਵੰਜਾ athvanja
Where marks go here: The number is fifty eight, not sixty eight, and it belongs to the father, not the patient. Candidates also flatten the conditional into a flat request to go home, losing the "if the first test is normal" that the doctor answers in the next segment.
- 7. Dr NguyenEnglish Punjabi35 words
Because of your family history we must repeat the troponin three hours later, at about eleven tonight. I am admitting you overnight for heart monitoring. You may feel perfectly well, but you must not leave.
tuhade parivaark itihaas karke sanu tinn ghante baad, yaani ajj raat giaaraan vaje de kareeb, troponin dubaara karna pavega. main tuhanu raat bhar dil di nigraani layi daakhal kar riha haan. ho sakda hai tuhanu bilkul theek lagge, par tusin itthon jaana nahin hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- the reason given is the family history
- the troponin will be repeated three hours later
- that is at about eleven tonight
- he is being admitted overnight
- the admission is for heart monitoring
- you may feel well, but you must not leave
Terms in this segment- family history — ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ parivaark itihaas
- to admit (to hospital) — ਦਾਖ਼ਲ ਕਰਨਾ daakhal karna
- monitoring / observation — ਨਿਗਰਾਨੀ nigraani
Where marks go here: Two time facts sit in one clause: three hours later AND about eleven tonight. Candidates keep one and drop the other. The modal contrast at the end (may feel well, must not leave) is a single scoreable unit that collapses if you render both verbs as "can".
- 8. Mr SandhuPunjabi English33 words
theek hai, main ruk jaanda haan. main Medicare vaala public mareez haan, taan ki raat da koi kharcha aavega? meri patni naun vaje de kareeb merian davaaian di list te ainak lai aavegi.
Model interpretationThat's fine, I will stay. I am a public patient with Medicare, so will there be any cost for the night? My wife will bring my medication list and my glasses at around nine o'clock.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- he agrees to stay
- he is a public patient with Medicare
- asks whether the overnight stay will cost anything
- his wife will come at around nine
- she will bring his medication list and his glasses
Terms in this segment- public patient — ਪਬਲਿਕ ਮਰੀਜ਼ public mareez
Where marks go here: "ਪਬਲਿਕ ਮਰੀਜ਼" is the Australian admission category "public patient", not "a patient of the public". Two items are being brought, the medication list and the glasses, and candidates who hear only "ਦਵਾਈਆਂ" report that she is bringing his medicines instead.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Use ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout for both the nurse and the doctor speaking to a man in his sixties, and for him speaking back. Slipping into ਤੂੰ with an older patient reads as rude and costs register marks even when the information is complete.
- Medicare and the public-patient category have no Punjabi equivalent. Keep the English terms and, if the patient signals confusion, add the briefest gloss rather than inventing a Punjabi coinage the patient has never heard.
- Punjabi families commonly attend emergency in a group and a daughter or son often speaks for the patient. The interpreter renders only what is said and does not merge the family's account with the patient's own words.

End of Lease: A Bond Claim for Carpet Cleaning and a Damaged Blind
Your brief. A Punjabi-speaking renter has just handed back the keys on a three-year tenancy in Melbourne. The property manager has completed the final inspection and the owner wants to claim part of the bond. You interpret at the agency counter as the two of them work through what is being claimed, what counts as fair wear and tear, and how the renter can dispute it.
Speakers: Alison Brady, property manager (English) and Mr Dhillon, the outgoing renter (Punjabi). You interpret for both.
- 1. Alison BradyEnglish Punjabi36 words
I did the final inspection on Monday. Your bond of two thousand three hundred and twenty dollars is held by the RTBA. I need to tell you that the owner wants to claim part of it.
main somvaar nu aakhri inspection keeti si. tuhada do hazaar tinn sau veeh daalar da bond RTBA kol jamhaan hai. mainu tuhanu dassna pai riha hai ki maalak us vichon kujh hisse da daava karna chaahunde han.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- final inspection was done on Monday
- the bond is two thousand three hundred and twenty dollars
- the bond is held by the RTBA, not by the agency
- the owner wants to claim part of the bond
- only part of it, not the whole bond
Terms in this segment- bond — ਬਾਂਡ bond
- final inspection — ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਇੰਸਪੈਕਸ਼ਨ aakhri inspection
- to claim — ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਨਾ daava karna
Where marks go here: $2,320 gets rounded to "about two thousand three hundred" and the mark is gone. Note also that the money sits with the RTBA, not the agent; renters who hear "the agency has your bond" are being misinformed, and assessors treat that as a meaning error.
- 2. Mr DhillonPunjabi English34 words
kihrhian cheezan da daava kar rahe ho? main jaan ton pahilan saara ghar saaf keeta si te carpet vi khud dhota si. asin tinn saal utthe rahe haan te kiraaya kade late nahin hoya.
Model interpretationWhich items are you claiming for? I cleaned the whole house before I left and I washed the carpet myself. We lived there for three years and the rent was never late.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- asks which items are being claimed
- he cleaned the whole house before leaving
- he washed the carpet himself
- the tenancy ran for three years
- the rent was never late
Terms in this segment- carpet — ਕਾਰਪੈਟ carpet
- myself / personally — ਖ਼ੁਦ khud
- rent — ਕਿਰਾਇਆ kiraaya
Where marks go here: "ਖ਼ੁਦ ਧੋਤਾ" means he did it himself, which is exactly the point in dispute against a professional clean. Dropping "himself" removes the whole basis of his objection and the next segment stops making sense.
- 3. Alison BradyEnglish Punjabi38 words
Two items. Professional steam cleaning of the carpet in the second bedroom, invoiced at two hundred and eighty six dollars, and a living room blind with three snapped slats, quoted at two hundred and fifty five dollars fitted.
do cheezan. dooje bedroom de carpet di professional steam cleaning, jis da bill do sau chhiaasi daalar hai, ate living room da blind jis dian tinn pattian tuttian hoyian han, jis da quotation lavaayi samet do sau pachvanja daalar hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- exactly two items are being claimed
- carpet cleaning is for the second bedroom only
- the carpet invoice is two hundred and eighty six dollars
- the blind is in the living room and has three snapped slats
- the blind quote is two hundred and fifty five dollars
- that quote includes fitting
Terms in this segment- steam cleaning — ਸਟੀਮ ਕਲੀਨਿੰਗ steam cleaning
- invoice — ਬਿੱਲ bill
- blind (window) — ਬਲਾਇੰਡ blind
- slats — ਪੱਟੀਆਂ pattian
Where marks go here: Two dollar figures, one a paid invoice and one an unpaid quote, land eight words apart and get swapped or merged. "Fitted" is a scoreable qualifier: the two hundred and fifty five dollars includes installation, so a renter who hears only the part cost is misled.
- 4. Mr DhillonPunjabi English33 words
uh blind taan pahile din ton hi dhupp naal kharaab si. mere kol shuru di condition report te fotoan han. ki ih aam tutt-bhajj vich nahin aaunda? main poore paise nahin dena chaahunda.
Model interpretationThat blind was damaged by the sun from the very first day. I have the original condition report and photos. Doesn't that count as fair wear and tear? I don't want to pay the full amount.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the blind was already sun-damaged from the first day
- he holds the original condition report
- he also has photos
- he asks whether it is fair wear and tear
- he refuses to pay the full amount
Terms in this segment- condition report — ਕੰਡੀਸ਼ਨ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ condition report
- fair wear and tear — ਆਮ ਟੁੱਟ-ਭੱਜ aam tutt-bhajj
- sunlight — ਧੁੱਪ dhupp
Where marks go here: "ਆਮ ਟੁੱਟ-ਭੱਜ" must come out as the legal phrase "fair wear and tear", not "normal breakage". The condition report and the photos are two separate pieces of evidence and each is ticked separately.
- 5. Alison BradyEnglish Punjabi38 words
Fading from the sun is fair wear and tear, which we are not claiming. Three snapped slats are damage. If you accept, the RTBA releases the balance, one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine dollars, into your account.
dhupp naal rang phikka paina aam tutt-bhajj hai, us da asin daava nahin kar rahe. tinn pattian da tuttna nuksaan hai. je tusin mann jaande ho, taan RTBA baaki rakam, ikk hazaar satt sau unaasi daalar, tuhade khaate vich paa devega.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- sun fading is accepted as fair wear and tear
- the agency is not claiming for the fading
- three snapped slats are treated as damage, not wear
- conditional: only if he accepts the claim
- the balance released is one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine dollars
- it goes into his bank account
Terms in this segment- to fade (colour) — ਰੰਗ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਪੈਣਾ rang phikka paina
- damage — ਨੁਕਸਾਨ nuksaan
- balance / remaining amount — ਬਾਕੀ ਰਕਮ baaki rakam
Where marks go here: She concedes one point and holds another in the same breath; candidates who hear "fair wear and tear" often report that the whole blind claim has been dropped. And $1,779 is a third figure in the dialogue, easily contaminated by the $2,320 heard earlier.
- 6. Mr DhillonPunjabi English34 words
Model interpretationIf I want to object, what do I have to do, and within how many days? Is there any cost? And when and how will I get the rest of the money? Please tell me clearly.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- asks what he has to do to object
- asks within how many days
- asks whether there is a cost
- asks when the remaining money is paid
- asks how the remaining money is paid
- asks to be told clearly
Terms in this segment- to object / dispute — ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਕਰਨਾ itraaz karna
- cost / expense — ਖ਼ਰਚਾ kharcha
- within (a period) — ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ de andar
Where marks go here: Four distinct questions in one segment, and candidates typically deliver three. "ਕਦੋਂ ਤੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ" is two questions, not one; timing and method are ticked separately on the marking sheet.
- 7. Alison BradyEnglish Punjabi39 words
You may dispute the blind, but you must apply to VCAT by the nineteenth of August, fourteen days from today. If you do not, the RTBA must pay the owner exactly as claimed. The fee is around eighty dollars.
tusin blind baare itraaz kar sakde ho, par tuhanu unni agast takk VCAT vich arzi deni hi pavegi, yaani ajj ton chaudaan din. je na ditti, taan RTBA nu maalak nu poori daave vaali rakam deni pavegi. fees takreeban assi daalar hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- he may dispute the blind, it is optional
- he must apply to VCAT, that part is compulsory
- the deadline is the nineteenth of August
- that is fourteen days from today
- if he does not apply, the RTBA pays the owner as claimed
- the application fee is around eighty dollars
Terms in this segment- VCAT — VCAT VCAT
- application — ਅਰਜ਼ੀ arzi
- fee — ਫ਼ੀਸ fees
- the nineteenth of August — ਉਨੀ ਅਗਸਤ unni agast
Where marks go here: The may/must contrast is the marked feature of this segment: disputing is a choice, the deadline is not. Candidates also lose "around" on the fee and quote eighty dollars as a fixed price, turning a hedge into a firm figure.

theek hai. main carpet vaale do sau chhiaasi daalar mann lainda haan, par blind vaale nahin. main shukkarvaar takk condition report te fotoan email kar diaanga, te baaki paise mere Commonwealth Bank khaate vich paa dio.
Model interpretationAlright. I accept the two hundred and eighty six dollars for the carpet, but not the blind. I will email the condition report and the photos by Friday, and please put the balance into my Commonwealth Bank account.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- he accepts the carpet claim of two hundred and eighty six dollars
- he does not accept the blind claim
- he will email the condition report and photos
- he will send them by Friday
- the balance is to go to his Commonwealth Bank account
Terms in this segment- to accept / agree to — ਮੰਨ ਲੈਣਾ mann laina
- Friday — ਸ਼ੁੱਕਰਵਾਰ shukkarvaar
- bank account — ਬੈਂਕ ਖਾਤਾ bank khaata
Where marks go here: This is a partial acceptance, and candidates report it as either full agreement or full refusal. Both halves must be delivered in the same sentence, with the figure attached to the carpet and the refusal attached to the blind.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- The bond system has no equivalent in most renters' experience of housing in Punjab, where a deposit is usually held by the landlord personally. Make sure the idea of a neutral government authority holding the money survives the interpretation.
- Keep ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions. Renters often speak to a property manager with careful deference and expect it back; dropping into a brusque register makes a legally neutral explanation sound like a threat.
- Fair wear and tear is a legal test with no fixed Punjabi phrase. ਆਮ ਟੁੱਟ-ਭੱਜ is the natural rendering, but an interpreter should signal that it is a defined term in the tenancy law rather than a casual description.

Marking yourself is the slow way
It works, and it is free — but it takes twenty minutes per dialogue and it depends on you being honest about what you actually said. Inside the course you record your answer, and it is transcribed and scored against the model automatically, segment by segment, with the information you dropped highlighted. 112 dialogues across every CCL domain, unlimited scored mock tests, and a vocabulary bank that resurfaces the terms you keep missing.
No card to start. The free papers here stay free either way.
Questions about this mock test
- Do medical dialogues in the NAATI CCL test use technical terms like troponin?
- Yes. Health dialogues routinely include a drug name, a test name and a number in the same segment, exactly as in this paper. You are not expected to explain the medicine, but the proper noun has to reach the other language recognisably rather than being replaced by a vague phrase such as "a special blood test".
- How do I interpret an Australian term like bond or RTBA when there is no Punjabi word for it?
- Keep the English term and add a very short gloss the first time it appears, for example "RTBA, the government office that holds your bond". Inventing a Punjabi coinage the client has never heard is treated as a distortion, while a brief gloss is normal professional practice and costs you nothing.
- How many dollar figures should I expect to carry in one CCL dialogue?
- Three or four is typical in a housing or finance dialogue, and this paper has four: the bond, the carpet invoice, the blind quote and the balance released. Assessors deliberately place two of them close together, so practise repeating a figure back internally before you start speaking.
- What is the difference between may and must in this test, and why does it matter?
- The property manager says the renter may dispute the claim but must apply to the tribunal by a set date, and the doctor says the patient may feel well but must not leave. Rendering both verbs as a single "can" loses the modal distinction, which is one of the most reliably marked features in an intermediate paper.
- How is this 90-mark paper actually scored when I sit it alone?
- Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, 90 in total, with 63 needed to pass and a floor of 29 on each dialogue. Tick every key point you delivered, divide by the total key points for that dialogue and multiply by 45. Deduct for distortions such as turning a negative ECG finding into an all-clear.
- Is it a mistake to interpret in the third person, for example he says he took his tablet?
- Yes, and it is a habit that costs marks throughout a paper. CCL interpreting is in the first person: you say "I take a blood pressure tablet" because that is what the patient said. Reporting speech also lengthens every segment and makes you far more likely to run out of memory before the end.
