Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 18: Making a Will and Claiming the Age Pension
We built this paper around the terms that have no clean Punjabi equivalent at all. Sitting it tells you whether you can borrow an English legal or social-security term and add a five-word functional gloss without stalling, padding, or quietly turning joint tenants into ordinary co-owners. If you pass this one, terminology is no longer what is holding your score down.
What this paper is built to expose
Advanced — legal, clinical or financial terminology under load. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.
- 1borrowing an English term and glossing it in a few words without stalling or over-explaining
- 2keeping joint tenants distinct from ordinary shared ownership, which changes who inherits
- 3carrying three separate dollar figures and three separate time limits across one dialogue
- 4distinguishing an enduring power of attorney from a medical treatment decision maker
- 5rendering the two-test comparison in the Age Pension, where the lower rate is the one paid
Sit the test
Model answers stay hidden until each dialogue is finished. Afterwards you mark yourself against 83 individual information units and the same 36-plus-9 split NAATI uses. The full transcript is further down the page whenever you want it — but read it before you sit, and the number stops meaning anything.
16 segments. Two dialogues. One take.
This runner keeps every model answer hidden until you finish a dialogue — the full transcript is further down the page, and reading it first is the one thing that makes your score meaningless. Interpret every segment out loud, as if someone is waiting for the meaning. Then mark yourself against the real criteria: 36 marks for accuracy, 9 for language quality, per dialogue.
Free, no account, nothing to install. Your score is saved on this device only.
Before you start
- Speak, do not think itInterpreting silently is a different skill from producing sound under pressure.
- Do not pause the segmentThe real test does not wait. Pausing turns a measurement into a rehearsal.
- Record yourself if you canYour phone's voice memo app is enough. It is the only way to hear your own hesitations.
- Mark harshlyAn assessor who has never met you certainly will.
How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.
The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant legal & tenancy dialogue cannot rescue a weak social & community services one. How CCL scoring really works.

Taking Instructions for a Will: Executors, Joint Tenancy and Power of Attorney
Your brief. Mr Sohan Singh Dhillon, aged seventy one, has come to a suburban law firm in Melbourne to give instructions for his will. The solicitor works through who will be his executor, how the family home and his superannuation actually pass on death, and the two documents that operate while he is still alive. You interpret for both parties.
Speakers: Solicitor at a suburban Melbourne law firm (English) and Mr Sohan Singh Dhillon, a Punjabi-speaking client aged 71 (Punjabi). You interpret for both.

Thank you for coming in. Before we draft the will, I need to confirm who your executor will be. The executor collects your assets, pays any debts, and distributes what remains to your beneficiaries.
aaun layi dhanvaad. vaseeat tiaar karan ton pahilan, mainu ih pakka karna hai ki tuhada executor kaun hovega. executor tuhadi jaidaad ikatthi karda hai, karze chukaunda hai, ate jo baaki bachda hai uh tuhade vaarsan nu vandda hai.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the executor must be confirmed before the will is drafted
- the executor collects the assets
- the executor pays the debts
- the executor distributes what is left over
- what is left goes to the beneficiaries, not to the executor
Terms in this segment- will — ਵਸੀਅਤ vaseeat
- executor — ਐਗਜ਼ੀਕਿਊਟਰ executor
- beneficiary — ਵਾਰਸ / ਲਾਭਪਾਤਰੀ vaaras / laabhpaatri
- debts — ਕਰਜ਼ੇ karze
Where marks go here: Candidates render "executor" as ਵਕੀਲ (lawyer) or ਮੈਨੇਜਰ, which changes who is in charge of the estate. Borrow the English word and add the short gloss; that is the professional solution and it costs three seconds.
- 2. Mr DhillonPunjabi English35 words
main aapne vadde puttar Jasveer nu rakhna chaahunda haan, par uh pichhle satt saalan ton Canada vich rahinda hai. je uh mere ton pahilan guzar jaave, taan phir ki hovega? ki vaseeat bekaar ho jaavegi?
Model interpretationI would like to appoint my eldest son Jasveer, but he has been living in Canada for the past seven years. If he passes away before me, what happens then? Does the will become useless?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- wants his eldest son Jasveer
- Jasveer lives in Canada
- he has been there seven years, not seven months
- the condition is Jasveer dying before the client, not after
- asks whether the will itself becomes useless
Terms in this segment- eldest son — ਵੱਡਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ vadda puttar
- to pass away — ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਣਾ guzar jaana
- useless / void — ਬੇਕਾਰ bekaar
Where marks go here: The conditional order gets reversed. "ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਵੇ" is the son dying first; candidates who say "if I die before him" invert the whole legal question and lose the segment's core mark.

Then we will name your daughter Manpreet as the alternate, since probate must be applied for here in Victoria. Now, the house on Sydney Road: the title says you and your wife hold it as joint tenants.
taan phir asin tuhadi dhee Manpreet nu badalvin executor likh dinde haan, kiunki probate, yaani vaseeat di adaalti manzoori, ithe Victoria vich hi laini paindi hai. hun Sydney Road vaala ghar. title mutaabak tusin ate tuhadi patni us nu joint tenants vajon rakhde ho.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the daughter Manpreet is named as the alternate executor
- the reason is that probate must be applied for in Victoria
- "must", not "should" or "can"
- the property in question is the house on Sydney Road
- the title records the client and his wife as joint tenants
Terms in this segment- alternate / substitute executor — ਬਦਲਵਾਂ ਐਗਜ਼ੀਕਿਊਟਰ badalvaan executor
- probate — ਪ੍ਰੋਬੇਟ probate
- title (to land) — ਟਾਈਟਲ title
- joint tenants — ਜੁਆਇੰਟ ਟੈਨੈਂਟਸ joint tenants
Where marks go here: "Alternate" is dropped and Manpreet is presented as a second executor acting alongside Jasveer. She only steps in if he cannot, and that difference is a scoreable qualifier. Do not translate "probate" as ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ; borrow it and gloss it once.

saada ghar mere te meri patni de saanjhe naan utte hai, ate ajkallh us di keemat takreeban naun lakkh dollar hai. main aapna addha hissa vaseeat vich Jasveer de naan karna chaahunda haan. ki ih ho sakda hai?
Model interpretationOur house is in my name and my wife's name jointly, and these days it is worth around nine hundred thousand dollars. I want to leave my half share to Jasveer in the will. Can that be done?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the house is in joint names with his wife
- current value around nine hundred thousand dollars
- "around", a hedged figure, not an exact valuation
- he wants to leave his half share, not the whole house
- the half share is to go to Jasveer through the will
Terms in this segment- in joint names — ਸਾਂਝੇ ਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ saanjhe naan utte
- value / price — ਕੀਮਤ keemat
- half share — ਅੱਧਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ addha hissa
- one lakh (100,000) — ਇੱਕ ਲੱਖ ikk lakkh
Where marks go here: ਨੌਂ ਲੱਖ is nine hundred thousand, not nine hundred and not nine million. Candidates who convert lakhs by reflex land on the wrong order of magnitude, and an assessor treats a wrong figure as harshly as an omitted one.

Not while you hold it as joint tenants. The survivor automatically takes the whole property and the will never touches it. We must sever the joint tenancy first. Your superannuation also sits outside the estate.
jadon takk tusin is nu joint tenants vajon rakhde ho, udon takk nahin. pahili maut utte poora ghar aapne aap bache hoye saathi nu mil jaanda hai, ate vaseeat us nu chhoonhdi hi nahin. saanu pahilan joint tenancy torhni pavegi. tuhada superannuation vi estate ton baahar rahinda hai.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- no, not while the property is held as joint tenants
- the survivor automatically takes the whole property
- the will does not touch a jointly held property at all
- the joint tenancy must be severed first
- superannuation also sits outside the estate
Terms in this segment- survivor / survivorship — ਬਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਾਥੀ bachia hoia saathi
- to sever a joint tenancy — ਜੁਆਇੰਟ ਟੈਨੈਂਸੀ ਤੋੜਨੀ joint tenancy torhni
- superannuation — ਸੁਪਰੈਨੂਏਸ਼ਨ / ਸੁਪਰ superannuation / super
- estate — ਅਸਟੇਟ estate
Where marks go here: This is the segment the paper is built on. "Joint tenants" flattened into ਸਾਂਝੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ (shared ownership) destroys the survivorship rule the solicitor is explaining, and the candidate then contradicts himself two clauses later. Borrow the term, then let the explanation do the work.

mere super vich ikk lakkh assi hazaar dollar han, ate main do hazaar das vich aapne bhraa da naan bharia si, jo hun nahin rahe. ate je mera dimaag kamm karna chhadd deve taan bank da kamm kaun sambhaalega?
Model interpretationThere is one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in my super, and back in 2010 I put down my brother's name, and he has since passed away. And if my mind stops working, who will handle the banking?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in superannuation
- the nomination was made in 2010
- the person nominated was his brother
- that brother has since died
- asks who handles banking if he loses mental capacity
Terms in this segment- super (superannuation) — ਸੁਪਰ super
- to nominate / put down a name — ਨਾਂ ਭਰਨਾ naan bharna
- he is no longer with us — ਹੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇ hun nahin rahe
- to handle / manage — ਸੰਭਾਲਣਾ sambhaalna
Where marks go here: ਇੱਕ ਲੱਖ ਅੱਸੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ is 180,000, and "ਦੋ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਸ" is the year 2010, not a sum of money. Two numbers in adjacent clauses of different kinds is exactly where assessors watch, and reading 2010 as "two thousand and ten dollars" is a common wipe-out.

Your super needs a binding nomination, renewed every three years, or the trustee decides. An enduring power of attorney covers money; a medical treatment decision maker covers health. Today I must also confirm your testamentary capacity.
tuhade super layi binding nomination chaahidi hai, jo har tinn saal baad navin karni paindi hai, nahin taan faisla fund da trustee karega. enduring power of attorney paise de maamle sambhaaldi hai, ate medical treatment decision maker sihat de faisle karda hai. ajj mainu tuhadi testamentary capacity, yaani vaseeat karan di maansik yogta, vi pakki karni pavegi.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- the super needs a binding nomination
- it must be renewed every three years
- otherwise the fund's trustee decides
- an enduring power of attorney is for money matters
- a medical treatment decision maker is for health decisions
- the solicitor must confirm testamentary capacity today
Terms in this segment- binding death benefit nomination — ਬਾਈਂਡਿੰਗ ਨਾਮੀਨੇਸ਼ਨ binding nomination
- enduring power of attorney — ਐਨਡਿਊਰਿੰਗ ਪਾਵਰ ਆਫ਼ ਅਟਾਰਨੀ enduring power of attorney
- medical treatment decision maker — ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਟਰੀਟਮੈਂਟ ਡਿਸੀਜ਼ਨ ਮੇਕਰ medical treatment decision maker
- testamentary capacity — ਟੈਸਟਾਮੈਂਟਰੀ ਕਪੈਸਿਟੀ testamentary capacity
Where marks go here: The two appointments get merged into one "power of attorney". They are separate documents covering separate decisions, and an assessor marks them as two distinct units. "Every three years" is also routinely lost, and it is the whole reason the client's old nomination has failed.

mere saandhoo di maut binaan vaseeat de hoyi si, te parivaar nu athaaraan maheene adaalat de chakkar kattne paye. main ajj hi dastkhat karne chaahunda haan, jadon takk mera dimaag poori tarhaan saaf hai.
Model interpretationMy wife's sister's husband died without a will, and the family had to run around the courts for eighteen months. I want to sign today, while my mind is still completely clear.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- his brother-in-law, specifically his wife's sister's husband, died
- that relative died without a will
- the family spent eighteen months dealing with the courts
- he wants to sign today, not at a later appointment
- the reason is that his mind is still clear now
Terms in this segment- wife's sister's husband — ਸਾਂਢੂ saandhoo
- without a will (intestate) — ਬਿਨਾਂ ਵਸੀਅਤ ਦੇ binaan vaseeat de
- to sign — ਦਸਤਖ਼ਤ ਕਰਨਾ dastkhat karna
Where marks go here: ਸਾਂਢੂ is a precise kinship term, the husband of the wife's sister. "Brother-in-law" alone is acceptable in the exam, but candidates who guess "cousin" or "uncle" invent a relationship. Also keep "eighteen months", not "a year and a half plus" vagueness.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Almost nothing in this dialogue has a clean Punjabi equivalent. Executor, probate, joint tenants, enduring power of attorney and testamentary capacity are all Australian legal constructs, and the professional practice an assessor rewards is to keep the English term and add a short functional gloss the first time only. Inventing a Punjabi rendering sounds fluent but changes the law.
- Gloss once, not every time. Candidates who re-explain probate at each mention run out of time and start dropping numbers from later clauses, which is where the marks actually sit. After the first gloss, use the borrowed term alone.
- Use ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout for both directions. The solicitor is speaking to a man of seventy one, and the client is speaking to a professional; ਤੂੰ anywhere would read as disrespect and mark the interpreter as untrained.
- Punjabi kinship is precise where English is vague. ਸਾਂਢੂ is specifically the husband of the wife's sister, and ਜੀਜਾ, ਸਾਲਾ and ਦਿਓਰ are all separate people that English lumps into "brother-in-law". Say "brother-in-law" and, if it can be done in three words, specify which one.

Claiming the Age Pension: Residence, the Two Tests and Gifting Rules
Your brief. Mrs Surinder Kaur Bains, aged sixty seven, is at a Services Australia service centre in Melbourne to lodge an Age Pension claim. The officer works through the qualifying age and residence rule, the income and assets tests, how her flat in Jalandhar and a gift to her son are treated, and how the payment arrives. You interpret for both parties.
Speakers: Services Australia officer at a Melbourne service centre (English) and Mrs Surinder Kaur Bains, a Punjabi-speaking claimant aged 67 (Punjabi). You interpret for both.
- 1. Services Australia officerEnglish Punjabi36 words
Thanks for coming to the Services Australia office. To qualify for the Age Pension you must be sixty seven, and you must have been an Australian resident for ten years, including five years in a row.
Services Australia de daftar aaun layi dhanvaad. Age Pension lain layi tuhadi umar sataahath saal honi zaroori hai, ate tuhada das saal Australia da vasneek rahina vi zaroori hai, jis vichon panj saal lagaataar hone chaahide han.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the qualifying age is sixty seven
- "must", a requirement, not a recommendation
- ten years as an Australian resident
- five of those ten years must be continuous
- the two conditions are cumulative, not alternatives
Terms in this segment- Age Pension — ਏਜ ਪੈਨਸ਼ਨ Age Pension
- to qualify — ਯੋਗ ਹੋਣਾ yog hona
Australia da vasneek
- continuously / in a row — ਲਗਾਤਾਰ lagaataar
Where marks go here: The ten years and the five years get collapsed into a single residence figure. They are two separate conditions and two separate marks, and "in a row" must survive as ਲਗਾਤਾਰ, otherwise the client hears that any five years anywhere will do.
- 2. Mrs BainsPunjabi English35 words
main March vich sataahath saalan di ho gayi si. asin do hazaar giaaraan vich Australia aaye si. par main aapni maan di dekhbhaal layi do saal India rahi si. ki us naal koi farak pavega?
Model interpretationI turned sixty seven in March. We came to Australia in 2011. But I stayed in India for two years to look after my mother. Will that make any difference?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- she turned sixty seven in March
- the family arrived in Australia in 2011
- she spent two years back in India
- the reason was caring for her mother
- she asks whether that absence affects her claim
Terms in this segment- to turn (an age) — ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ saalan di ho jaana
- care / looking after — ਦੇਖਭਾਲ dekhbhaal
- to make a difference — ਫ਼ਰਕ ਪੈਣਾ farak paina
Where marks go here: Three numbers of three different kinds sit in this segment: an age, a year, and a duration. Candidates who deliver "sixty seven, two thousand eleven, two" without labelling each one leave the assessor unable to tick any of them.
- 3. Services Australia officerEnglish Punjabi38 words
Thirteen years in total is fine, provided one stretch ran five years unbroken. Now we test your rate twice, once under the income test and once under the assets test, and you are paid whichever rate is lower.

What must survive (5 marks of information)- thirteen years of residence in total is sufficient
- the condition is one unbroken five-year stretch
- the rate is worked out twice
- once under the income test and once under the assets test
- the lower of the two rates is the one paid
Terms in this segment- income test — ਇਨਕਮ ਟੈਸਟ income test
- assets test — ਐਸੈੱਟਸ ਟੈਸਟ assets test
- rate (of payment) — ਦਰ dar
- provided that — ਬਸ਼ਰਤੇ ਕਿ basharte ki
Where marks go here: "Whichever rate is lower" is routinely rendered as "whichever you prefer" or, worse, "whichever is higher". It is the single most consequential clause in the dialogue and it is a conditional, so it must survive with its comparison intact.
- 4. Mrs BainsPunjabi English35 words
saada aapna ghar Craigieburn vich hai, te bank vich chaali hazaar dollar paye han. Jalandhar vich saada ikk flat vi hai jo kiraaye utte charhia hoia hai. ghar taan gintee vich nahin aaunda, hai naa?
Model interpretationWe own our home in Craigieburn, and we have forty thousand dollars in the bank. We also have a flat in Jalandhar that is rented out. The home is not counted, is it?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- they own their own home in Craigieburn
- forty thousand dollars in the bank
- a flat in Jalandhar, India
- the Jalandhar flat is rented out, not vacant
- she assumes the family home is not counted and seeks confirmation
Terms in this segment- our own home — ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ aapna ghar
- rented out — ਕਿਰਾਏ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ kiraaye utte charhia
- to be counted — ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਣਾ gintee vich aauna
Where marks go here: The tag question ਹੈ ਨਾ carries a real assumption the officer is about to correct, so it must come across as a question. Flattening it into a statement removes the setup and the next segment's correction lands with nothing to correct.
- 5. Services Australia officerEnglish Punjabi35 words
Your Craigieburn home is exempt, but the Jalandhar flat is not. We count its market value as an asset and the rent as income, converted to Australian dollars. You must declare both on the claim.

What must survive (6 marks of information)- the Craigieburn home is exempt
- the Jalandhar flat is not exempt
- its market value counts as an asset
- the rent counts as income
- amounts must be converted to Australian dollars
- both must be declared on the claim
Terms in this segment- exempt — ਛੋਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਣਾ chhott vich aauna
- market value — ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਕੀਮਤ baazaari keemat
- to declare — ਦੱਸਣਾ / ਐਲਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ dassna / elaan karna
- mandatory — ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ laazmi
Where marks go here: Two different treatments of one property, the capital value under one test and the rent under the other, get merged into "the flat counts". That is one tick instead of two. The obligation is also "must", so ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ or ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ, never ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ.

pichhle saal asin aapne munde nu ghar di deposit layi panjaah hazaar dollar de ditte san. uh paise taan hun saade kol han hi nahin, phir uh saadi jaidaad vich kiven gine jaanange?
Model interpretationLast year we gave our son fifty thousand dollars for a house deposit. That money is simply not with us any more, so how can it be counted as our assets?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the gift was made last year
- fifty thousand dollars
- it went to their son
- the purpose was a house deposit
- she argues the money is no longer theirs
Terms in this segment- deposit (on a house) — ਡਿਪਾਜ਼ਿਟ deposit
- to give away outright — ਦੇ ਦੇਣਾ de dena
- assets / property — ਜਾਇਦਾਦ jaidaad
Where marks go here: "ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ" is an outright gift, not a loan. Candidates who soften it to "we helped him with" or "we lent him" change the legal character of the transaction and the officer's answer about gifting limits stops making sense.

You may gift ten thousand dollars a year, or thirty thousand over five years. Anything above that, so forty thousand dollars, counts as your asset for five years. The pension is then paid fortnightly with a Pensioner Concession Card.
tusin ikk saal vich das hazaar dollar, jaan panj saalan vich teeh hazaar dollar takk tohfe vajon de sakde ho. is ton uppar di rakam, yaani chaali hazaar dollar, panj saal takk tuhadi hi jaidaad ginee jaavegi. phir pension har dooje hafte aavegi, ate naal Pensioner Concession Card vi milega.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- ten thousand dollars may be gifted in one year
- thirty thousand dollars over five years
- "may", a permitted limit, not an obligation
- the excess in her case is forty thousand dollars
- the excess still counts as her asset for five years
- the pension is paid fortnightly with a Pensioner Concession Card
Terms in this segment- gifting limit — ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਹੱਦ tohfa den di hadd
Pensioner Concession Card
Where marks go here: Four figures land in one segment: ten thousand, thirty thousand, forty thousand and five years. Candidates who carry three of the four still lose a mark, and swapping the annual limit with the five-year limit is the most common single error on this paper.

hun samajh aa gayi. taan saanu Jalandhar vaala flat ate panjaah hazaar vaala tohfa, doven dassne painge. main ajj hi myGov utte claim bhar dindi haan ate passport di kaapi naal laa dindi haan.
Model interpretationI understand now. So we have to declare both the Jalandhar flat and the fifty thousand dollar gift. I will lodge the claim on myGov today and attach a copy of my passport.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- she confirms she now understands
- both the Jalandhar flat and the gift must be declared
- the gift figure is fifty thousand dollars
- she will lodge the claim through myGov
- she will lodge it today, and attach a passport copy
Terms in this segment- myGov — ਮਾਈਗਵ myGov
- to lodge a claim — ਕਲੇਮ ਭਰਨਾ claim bharna
- to attach — ਨਾਲ ਲਾਉਣਾ naal laauna
Where marks go here: "ਮਾਈਗਵ" must come back as myGov, the government portal, not as "the government website" or an invented app name. Losing a named Australian system in the English direction reads to an assessor as a comprehension failure, not a style choice.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Centrelink terminology resists translation the same way legal terminology does. Income test, assets test, deeming and the Pensioner Concession Card are named parts of an Australian system, so borrow them and, where the meaning is not self-evident, add one short gloss. A candidate who translates both tests as ਜਾਂਚ makes the officer's central point, that the lower of two rates is paid, impossible to follow.
- Overseas assets are a genuine cultural flashpoint. Many Punjabi families hold land or a flat in India and assume it is invisible to Australian authorities. The interpreter renders the officer's obligation faithfully, including ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ for "must declare", and does not soften it into advice out of sympathy for the client.
- Helping a son with a house deposit is an ordinary family duty rather than a transaction, so the officer's word "gift" can sound accusatory to the client. Keep the neutral ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ or ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਪੈਸੇ and let the rule speak for itself; do not add reassurance the officer never gave.
- Use ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions and keep the officer's register plain and administrative. Punjabi speakers often address government staff with elaborate deference, but the interpreter matches the source register rather than upgrading it, and equally does not clip the client's politeness out of the English.

Learn these before you sit the paper a second time. More social & community services vocabulary.
| English | Punjabi | Transliteration |
|---|---|---|
| Age PensionKeep the program name in English so it is not confused with an Indian old-age scheme.
| residence requirementTen years as an Australian resident, with at least five of them unbroken. Two conditions, two marks.
| income testOne of the two rate calculations. Borrow it so it stays distinct from the assets test. | ਇਨਕਮ ਟੈਸਟ | income test |
| assets testThe other calculation, run on what is owned. The candidate must keep both names apart across the whole dialogue; collapsing them into one ਜਾਂਚ is the classic flattening error. | ਐਸੈੱਟਸ ਟੈਸਟ | assets test |
| rate of payment | ਪੈਨਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਦਰ | pension di dar |
| exempt assetThe principal home is exempt; property overseas is not. The contrast is the heart of the dialogue.
| gifting limit / deprivationTen thousand dollars in a financial year and thirty thousand across five years. Anything above is still assessed as the claimant's asset for five years.
| financial year | ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਾਲ | vittee saal |
| Pensioner Concession CardKeep the card's proper name. Describing it only as ਛੋਟ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਾਰਡ loses the specific entitlement the client would have to ask for by name.
Marking yourself is the slow way
It works, and it is free — but it takes twenty minutes per dialogue and it depends on you being honest about what you actually said. Inside the course you record your answer, and it is transcribed and scored against the model automatically, segment by segment, with the information you dropped highlighted. 112 dialogues across every CCL domain, unlimited scored mock tests, and a vocabulary bank that resurfaces the terms you keep missing.
No card to start. The free papers here stay free either way.
Questions about this mock test
- Should I translate legal terms like executor and probate, or keep them in English?
- Keep them in English and add a short gloss the first time only. NAATI assessors accept a borrowed term with a brief functional explanation, because that is what practising interpreters do in a solicitor's office. Inventing a Punjabi word for probate risks changing the legal meaning, and repeating the gloss on every mention burns time you need for the numbers later in the segment.
- Why does this test count as the hardest one in the free set?
- Because almost every scoreable unit is a term with no clean Punjabi equivalent, and several of them are near-neighbours that candidates merge. Joint tenants versus shared ownership, enduring power of attorney versus medical treatment decision maker, and income test versus assets test are three pairs where flattening one into the other costs marks on multiple segments at once.
- Does the CCL test really include wills and superannuation dialogues?
- Yes. Legal and financial scenarios are a standard part of the CCL domain list, and estate matters come up because they are exactly the situation where a family needs an interpreter. You are never asked for legal advice, only to render what the solicitor says accurately, including the parts you personally would not have known before you prepared.
- How do I handle lakhs when the client says nine lakh dollars?
- Convert to the Australian unit in your English rendering. Nine lakh is nine hundred thousand, and one lakh eighty thousand is one hundred and eighty thousand. Leaving lakh in the English is a comprehension failure for an English-speaking listener, and getting the order of magnitude wrong is marked as harshly as omitting the figure entirely.
- Do I need to know the actual Age Pension rates to pass this dialogue?
- No. You are marked on rendering what the officer says, not on knowing current rates. What you do need is the vocabulary of the system, the qualifying age, the residence rule, both tests and the gifting limits, so that when a figure appears you can attach it to the right concept rather than guessing which test it belongs to.
- What is the single mark most people lose in the Age Pension dialogue?
- The clause saying you are paid whichever rate is lower. Candidates render it as whichever you prefer, or reverse it to whichever is higher, and the client is left with a completely wrong understanding of the payment. It is a comparison inside a conditional, which is the structure this whole paper is built to stress.
