How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.

Taking a Statement After a House Break-In
Your brief. A house in the northern suburbs of Melbourne was broken into while the family was out at a wedding function. A senior constable has come to the address to take a formal statement from the homeowner, Mr Sandhu, who speaks Punjabi. The officer must caution him, fix the timeline of the evening, itemise what was taken, record a serial number, warn him off the forensic scene, and give him the event number he will need for his insurance claim.

Where marks go here: Two clock times sit in one segment and candidates deliver only one, or convert ਸਵਾ ਦਸ into "ten thirty". ਸਵਾ ਦਸ is a quarter past ten; ਸਾਢੇ ਛੇ is half past six. Getting either wrong destroys the window the officer builds in the next segment.

Where marks go here: This is an either or question and candidates deliver only the first half, so the officer answers the wrong thing. The word ਸਿਰਫ਼ (alone, on its own) is what makes it a genuine alternative; drop it and the question stops being a question.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- A police caution has no everyday Punjabi equivalent, and community speakers often hear any police warning as an accusation. Keep ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout and render the caution as a procedural obligation on the officer, so the victim does not think he is being treated as a suspect.
- Punjabi kinship terms are far more precise than English ones. ਸਾਲਾ names the wife's brother specifically, and in this dialogue that precision matters because the officer is building a list of people who legitimately hold a key.
- There is no clean Punjabi word for an event number or an incident reference, and clients frequently confuse it with a case number or a court file. Keeping the English term and treating it as a proper noun is safer than inventing a translation the insurer will not recognise.

Pharmacist Counselling on a New Antibiotic Script
Your brief. A Punjabi-speaking woman in her sixties brings a new prescription to a community pharmacy in Melbourne's west. She has been given a seven-day course of antibiotics for a dental infection, but she already takes warfarin for a heart valve. The pharmacist must explain the dose and timing, flag the interaction with her blood thinner, set out exactly when she should stop the medicine and ring for help, and explain why one item on the script costs far more than the other.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Advice from neighbours and relatives carries real weight in Punjabi families, and a patient repeating what a ਗੁਆਂਢਣ told her is not being difficult. The interpreter must preserve who said what, because the pharmacist's correction is aimed at the source of the advice as much as the advice itself.
- Alcohol is a sensitive subject for many Punjabi families and a client may raise it obliquely, as ਇੱਕ ਪੈੱਗ at a family function rather than as a question about drinking. Render the question as asked, without softening it or editorialising, and keep ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout.
- The PBS, the concession card and the Safety Net have no Punjabi equivalents and are routinely confused with Medicare. Keeping the English names and adding a one-clause gloss is what an assessor expects; inventing a Punjabi translation leaves the client unable to ask for the right thing at the counter.

Questions about this mock test
- How should I interpret a police caution in the CCL test?
- Keep it formal and keep it as an obligation. A caution is not advice, so "I must caution you that this statement may be tendered as evidence" needs a Punjabi rendering that still sounds like a legal warning: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ, with ਅਦਾਲਤੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਬੂਤ intact. Softening it into friendly conversation is one of the most reliable ways to lose marks on a legal dialogue.
- Do I have to repeat a serial number exactly?
- Yes. Alphanumeric strings like the laptop serial 5CG2417XKN and the police event number P41927 are treated as scoreable units, and a dropped or transposed character is marked as an omission. Say them in blocks rather than as one run of characters, and if the speaker groups them a particular way, keep that grouping in your rendering.
- Do pharmacy dialogues in the NAATI CCL test use technical drug names?
- They use real drug names, but they are always paired with a plain explanation, exactly as a pharmacist would speak to a patient. Metronidazole and warfarin should be transliterated into Gurmukhi rather than translated, because the patient has to be able to repeat the name at the clinic. What is actually being tested is the dose, the timing and the interaction around the name.
- What is the difference between a PBS price and a private script?
- A medicine listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is subsidised by the federal government, so a concession card holder pays a small fixed co-payment. A private script is one the PBS does not cover, so the patient pays the pharmacy's full price and it does not count towards the PBS Safety Net. In this paper the two items on the same prescription are priced by these two different routes.
- How do I keep a long conditional instruction together under exam pressure?
- Note the trigger and the action as a pair before you start speaking. In segment five of the pharmacy dialogue, three symptoms sit between the "if" and the "then", and candidates who start rendering immediately deliver the symptoms and then forget the instruction to stop the antibiotic and phone. Say the action first if you need to; a reordered conditional still scores, a missing one does not.
- Why does this paper count as advanced rather than intermediate?
- Because both dialogues turn on register and modality rather than vocabulary. The legal dialogue asks you to hold a formal caution and to keep a must separate from a may in adjacent sentences, and the health dialogue asks you to carry a six-clause conditional and two prices attached to two different items. None of that is hard to understand; it is hard to reproduce accurately at speed.
