Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 1: GP Appointment and Centrelink Family Payments

The words are everyday words, but the marks are not: eight segments carry a diagnosis, a dosing instruction, a ten-week wait, a gap fee, a fourteen-day rule and a debt figure. Sitting it tells us whether you can hold three or four numbers in one breath and hand them back in the right order, which is what separates a 63 from a 58.
What this paper is built to expose
Foundation — everyday vocabulary, the difficulty is in the detail. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.

How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.
The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant health & medical dialogue cannot rescue a weak social & community services one. How CCL scoring really works.

GP Visit: A Child's Persistent Cough and an Asthma Diagnosis
Your brief. Mrs Sandhu has brought her seven-year-old daughter Jasleen back to a bulk-billing general practice in the western suburbs after three weeks of coughing. The GP, Dr Harding, has the chest X-ray and breathing test results and will explain the diagnosis, start a preventer and a spacer, make a hospital referral with a waiting time, and set out what the family will and will not pay. You are the interpreter.

Where marks go here: Two different results are reported here and candidates fuse them, saying only that "the tests were fine". The X-ray being clear and the breathing test being abnormal point in opposite directions; losing that contrast loses the whole logic of the segment. "Mild" is also a scoreable qualifier, not decoration.

Where marks go here: ਸੱਸ is the husband's mother, and rendering it as "my mother" or a vague "someone at home" throws away a scoreable relationship the assessor is listening for. The exercise trigger is also often dropped because the honey sentence sits between it and the diagnosis.

Where marks go here: The colour codes carry the whole instruction. Swapping brown and blue, or saying "two puffs a day" instead of two puffs morning and night, turns a correct rendering into a dangerous one and costs marks on both the number and the frequency. "Even on good days" is a separate unit again.

Where marks go here: Two questions are asked and candidates answer only the second. The growth worry is also softened into "she is a bit worried about the medicine", which strips the concrete belief the doctor then has to correct, so the next segment stops making sense.

Where marks go here: Three dollar figures in one breath, and the third is derived from the first two. Candidates who try to keep all three verbatim usually lose the middle one; the safe technique is to render the charge, the rebate, then the gap in the same order the doctor gave them, without recalculating.

Where marks go here: The decision and the two requests are three separate units. Candidates who lead with the requests often forget to state that she has chosen the public clinic, which is the resolution of the whole dialogue. Four weeks must not drift into the ten weeks mentioned earlier.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- The GP and the parent are strangers in a professional setting, so every ਤੂੰ in your rendering is a register error. Use ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions, including when the doctor gives an instruction, because English imperatives sound blunter in Punjabi than they do in English.
- Bulk-billing has no equivalent in the Indian health system, where you pay the clinic and there is no rebate. A one-clause gloss such as ਯਾਨੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ is legitimate cultural mediation; replacing it with a made-up Punjabi term is not.
- Home remedies from an older relative are a normal part of these consultations, and the mother-in-law's honey is not something to edit out politely. Interpreters who soften it deprive the doctor of clinical information and lose a scoreable unit at the same time.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- A Centrelink debt is a source of real shame for many families, and clients hedge or apologise at length. Interpret the hedging as it is said rather than tidying it into a crisp admission, but never add reassurance of your own; comforting the client is the officer's job, not the interpreter's.
- Both parties must be addressed with ਤੁਸੀਂ. Officers in Australia use first names and a very direct style, and a literal Punjabi rendering of "you were overpaid" can sound accusatory, so keep the neutral passive rather than switching to ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਕੀਤਾ.
- myGov, balancing and the fortnightly cycle have no equivalent in the Indian system, where welfare is not reconciled against an annual tax return. Questions about this mock test
- Is this free mock test the same difficulty as the real NAATI CCL exam?
- The format is identical: two dialogues from two different domains, around 300 source words each, delivered in segments of about 35 words, marked out of 45 per dialogue for 90 total. This paper sits at the easier end of the real range because the vocabulary is high frequency, but the number density is genuine exam level.
- Do medical dialogues in the CCL test use technical terms?
- Rarely the specialist ones. A GP speaking to a parent uses words like preventer, spacer, wheeze and referral, not pharmacological names. What the assessors actually test is whether you keep a dosing instruction intact, so two puffs morning and night must not become two puffs a day.
- How do I interpret bulk billing and gap fees into Punjabi?
- There is no Punjabi equivalent because the billing arrangement does not exist in India. Keep the English term and, if the client is clearly lost, add a short gloss such as ਯਾਨੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਸੇ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ. A one-clause explanation is accepted cultural mediation; a long invented translation is not.

- Because that is exactly how a real debt conversation runs, and it is where marks are lost. This paper deliberately puts $62,000, $78,000 and $84,000 in one dialogue alongside $2,340, $40 and $25. If you cannot keep an estimate apart from a confirmed figure apart from a repayment, the assessor hears it immediately.
- Should I interpret the mother-in-law's home remedy or leave it out?
- Interpret it in full. Interpreters sometimes edit out honey, warm water or other home remedies to spare the family embarrassment, but that removes clinical information the doctor needs and deletes a scoreable unit. Your role is to convey everything said, not to curate what sounds sensible.
- How should I score myself on this paper?
- Tick every key point you actually said, across all sixteen segments, then convert. Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, you need 63 out of 90 overall, and at least 29 on each dialogue, so a strong health score cannot rescue a weak Centrelink one. Score each dialogue separately before you add them.
