How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.

Where marks go here: Three numbers land in one segment: 100, 5, and the fortnight. Candidates keep the 100 and drop the 5. The bigger loss is "even if it is zero" — without it the client hears that he only reports when he earns something, and that is the single most common cause of a real debt.

Where marks go here: This is the segment the paper is built on. Punjabi speakers reach for ਬੰਦ for both ideas, so "suspended, not cancelled" collapses into one word and the reassurance is destroyed. Use ਰੋਕੀ ਜਾਣੀ for suspended against ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੀ for cancelled, and keep the back-pay clause; dropping it costs a separate mark.

Where marks go here: Workforce Australia and myGov are proper nouns and must survive in English; candidates who translate them to "the employment office" and "the government website" lose two marks in one segment. "Before the operation" is a deadline, not a detail.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Australian payment and program names stay in English inside the Gurmukhi: JobSeeker, Centrelink, Services Australia, Workforce Australia, myGov. Clients recognise these names on their letters, and a well-meaning Punjabi calque leaves them unable to find the service they were told about.
- The officer uses the respectful ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout and addresses the client as ਸੰਧੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ. Even when he is anxious and speaking quickly, the interpreter keeps the professional register and never drops into ਤੂੰ, which would read as talking down to a client already worried about his money.
- There is no everyday Punjabi noun for a payment suspension as distinct from a cancellation, because the concept belongs to the Australian welfare system rather than the language. The interpreter must build the contrast lexically, with ਰੋਕੀ ਜਾਣੀ against ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੀ, rather than relying on a single word to carry it.

Choosing a Mobile Plan and Paying Off a Handset
Your brief. In a suburban phone shop, a sales consultant takes a Punjabi-speaking woman through two mobile plans, a $1,200 handset paid off over twenty-four months, the data allowance and what happens once it runs out, call rates to India, and keeping her existing number. She is planning six months in India next year, which makes the early-cancellation rule the decisive fact.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Telecommunications vocabulary is spoken in English by Australian Punjabi speakers: ਪਲੈਨ, ਡਾਟਾ, ਸਿਮ, ਗੀਗਾਬਾਈਟ, ਬ੍ਰੇਕ ਫ਼ੀਸ. Inventing Sanskritised equivalents for these sounds bookish and leaves the customer unable to repeat the terms back to the shop later.
- Punjabi counts in units of hundreds and lakhs, so ਬਾਰਾਂ ਸੌ for twelve hundred is natural, while $1,200 read out digit by digit is not. The interpreter should use the numeral system the listener thinks in, but must never round or approximate the amount itself.
- A retail consultant in Australia speaks casually and uses first names quickly, but the customer is an older woman. The interpreter keeps ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions rather than mirroring the shop assistant's informality, since a Punjabi client would hear ਤੂੰ from a stranger in a shop as rudeness.

Questions about this mock test
- Does a missed Centrelink appointment really only suspend the payment?
- In this dialogue, yes, and that distinction is the point of the paper. A missed provider appointment suspends the payment until a rescheduled appointment is attended, with back pay for the gap, while cancellation follows repeated failures over several months. Candidates who render both as "the payment stops" lose the reassurance the officer is giving and several marks with it.
- How do I keep "suspended" and "cancelled" apart in Punjabi?
- Choose two different verbs before you open your mouth and stay with them for the whole dialogue. Use ਰੋਕੀ ਜਾਣੀ for a suspension, which sounds temporary, and ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੀ for a cancellation, which sounds final. If you use ਬੰਦ for both, the contrast the assessor is listening for simply does not exist in your rendering, no matter how fluent the rest is.
- Are technology dialogues in the CCL test full of technical jargon?
- Rarely. What they are full of is numbers and conditions attached to numbers: a data allowance, a per-minute rate, a contract length, a payoff period. The vocabulary in this phone-shop dialogue is mostly English loanwords that Punjabi speakers already use, so the difficulty sits in holding $45, $55, 180GB, 24 months, $50 a month and 19 cents a minute in the right places.
- Why is the early-cancellation sentence worth so many marks?
- Because it packs three things into one clause: a condition, a consequence, and a manner. The condition is cancelling early, the consequence is the remaining handset balance falling due, and the manner is immediately and in one lump sum. Candidates typically deliver the condition, hint at the consequence, and drop the manner, which is exactly the detail that changes the customer's decision.
- Should I translate JobSeeker, Workforce Australia and myGov into Punjabi?
- No. These are proper names of Australian programs and services, and clients see them printed on letters, apps and shopfronts. Say them in English inside your Punjabi sentence, and if the client seems unsure you may add a two-word gloss, but never replace the name. A translated "employment office" leaves the client unable to find the service they were just told to contact.
- Is a foundation-level paper like this too easy to be worth sitting?
- Foundation refers to the vocabulary and sentence length, not the marking. The segments here run 32 to 40 words, which is full exam length, and the two conditionals are the same kind an advanced paper uses. If you can sit this one and score above 63 without dropping the suspension contrast or the lump-sum clause, the harder papers become a vocabulary problem rather than a technique problem.
