Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 5: Parent-Teacher Interview and Car Insurance Renewal
We built this paper for candidates who lose marks on plain numbers rather than on hard vocabulary. Sit it and you will find out whether a reading benchmark, two meeting dates and six dollar figures survive your rendering, or quietly disappear between the segment you hear and the sentence you produce.
What this paper is built to expose
Foundation — everyday vocabulary, the difficulty is in the detail. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.
- 1Holding two numbers from the same scale apart: reading level 24 against the level 30 end-of-year benchmark
- 2Carrying six separate dollar figures through one dialogue without swapping the excess for the premium
- 3Rendering a full date and a weekday time exactly as spoken, including 3.30 rather than 3.00
- 4Keeping modal force intact when the consultant says you must pay the excess before repairs start
- 5Glossing English school and insurance terms that have no Punjabi equivalent instead of guessing a literal word
Sit the test
Model answers stay hidden until each dialogue is finished. Afterwards you mark yourself against 83 individual information units and the same 36-plus-9 split NAATI uses. The full transcript is further down the page whenever you want it — but read it before you sit, and the number stops meaning anything.
16 segments. Two dialogues. One take.
This runner keeps every model answer hidden until you finish a dialogue — the full transcript is further down the page, and reading it first is the one thing that makes your score meaningless. Interpret every segment out loud, as if someone is waiting for the meaning. Then mark yourself against the real criteria: 36 marks for accuracy, 9 for language quality, per dialogue.
Free, no account, nothing to install. Your score is saved on this device only.
Before you start
- Speak, do not think itInterpreting silently is a different skill from producing sound under pressure.
- Do not pause the segmentThe real test does not wait. Pausing turns a measurement into a rehearsal.
- Record yourself if you canYour phone's voice memo app is enough. It is the only way to hear your own hesitations.
- Mark harshlyAn assessor who has never met you certainly will.
How this mock test is scored
NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.
Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.
Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.
The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant education dialogue cannot rescue a weak insurance & super one. How CCL scoring really works.

Parent-Teacher Interview: Reading Below Benchmark in Year 4
Your brief. It is parent-teacher interview week at a Victorian state primary school. Ms Bennett teaches Year 4 and has fifteen minutes with Mrs Grewal, whose son Arjun is well behind the reading benchmark but a year ahead in maths. The teacher wants the parent to accept a small-group literacy programme and to change what happens at home after school.
Speakers: Year 4 classroom teacher (English) and Punjabi-speaking mother of a Year 4 student (Punjabi). You interpret for both.
- 1. Ms BennettEnglish Punjabi39 words
Thank you for coming in. Arjun has settled well into Year 4 and he is kind to the other children. Today I want to go through his reading and his maths, because they are quite different at the moment.
aaun layi dhanvaad. Arjun chauthi jamaat vich changi tarhaan set ho gaya hai ate baaki bachian naal pyaar naal rahinda hai. ajj main us di reading ate hisaab baare gall karni chaahundi haan, kiunki is vele dovaan vich kaafi fark hai.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- thanks the parent for coming in
- Arjun has settled well into Year 4
- he is kind to the other children
- today's discussion covers reading and maths
- the two subjects are quite different at the moment
Terms in this segment- to settle in — ਸੈੱਟ ਹੋਣਾ set hona
- maths — ਹਿਸਾਬ hisaab
- difference — ਫ਼ਰਕ fark
Where marks go here: "Year 4" is a school year, not the child's age. Candidates who turn it into "four years old" or drop it lose the anchor every later benchmark hangs on, and "settled well" is about behaviour, not marks.
- 2. Mrs GrewalPunjabi English33 words
jee dasso madam. ghar vich uh kitaab chukkan ton bhajjda hai, par hisaab barhe shauk naal karda hai. mainu taan lagda si ki sabh theek chall riha hai. ki koi gambheer samasia hai?
Model interpretationPlease tell me, madam. At home he avoids picking up a book, but he does his maths very happily. I thought everything was going fine. Is there a serious problem?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- invites the teacher to go on
- at home he avoids picking up a book
- he does maths willingly and with enthusiasm
- the parent assumed everything was going fine
- asks whether the problem is serious
Terms in this segment- to avoid / shy away from — ਭੱਜਣਾ bhajjna
- with enthusiasm — ਸ਼ੌਕ ਨਾਲ shauk naal
- serious — ਗੰਭੀਰ gambheer
Where marks go here: ਭੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ means avoids here, not physically runs away, and ਗੰਭੀਰ (serious) is a scoreable qualifier. "Is there a problem?" without "serious" flattens how worried the parent has just become.
- 3. Ms BennettEnglish Punjabi40 words
Maths is a real strength. He is working a year above level in number. Reading is where I am worried. Arjun is on reading level 24, and the benchmark we expect by the end of Year 4 is level 30.
hisaab vich uh bahut vadhia hai. ginti vaale kamm vich uh aapni jamaat ton ikk saal agge chall riha hai. fikar reading da hai. Arjun is vele reading level 24 utte hai, jadki chauthi jamaat de akheer tak sanu level 30 di ummeed hundi hai.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- maths is a genuine strength
- he is a full year above level in number work
- reading is the area of concern
- he is currently on reading level 24
- the end-of-Year-4 benchmark is level 30
Terms in this segment- reading level — ਰੀਡਿੰਗ ਲੈਵਲ reading level
- benchmark / expected standard — ਮਿਆਰ miaar
- number work — ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ginti vaala kamm
Where marks go here: Two numbers on the same scale, six levels apart. Assessors regularly hear level 30 given as his current level and 24 as the target, which reverses the whole message. "A year above level" in maths must not drift into "a year behind".
- 4. Mrs GrewalPunjabi English36 words
level 24 te 30 vich taan kaafi fark hai. saade ghar vich asin Punjabi bolde haan, ki ise karke uh pichhe rah gaya hai? ate ki us nu agle saal isse jamaat vich rakh lia javega?
Model interpretationThere is quite a gap between level 24 and level 30. We speak Punjabi at home. Is that why he has fallen behind? And will he be kept back in the same class next year?
What must survive (4 marks of information)- notes the gap between level 24 and level 30
- the family speaks Punjabi at home
- asks whether the home language is the reason
- asks whether he will repeat the same class next year
Terms in this segment- to fall behind — ਪਿੱਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਣਾ pichhe rah jaana
- class / year level — ਜਮਾਤ jamaat
- to be kept back — ਰੱਖ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ rakh lia jaana
Where marks go here: Two separate questions ride in this segment and the second one, repeating the year, is the one candidates drop after wrestling with the first. Both carry marks, and both must stay as questions.
- 5. Ms BennettEnglish Punjabi39 words
No, speaking Punjabi at home is not the cause, and he will not repeat the year. What I am recommending is a small-group literacy programme: five children with our support teacher, four mornings a week, thirty minutes each session.
nahin, ghar vich Punjabi bolna is da kaaran nahin hai, ate us nu ihi jamaat dubaara nahin karni pavegi. main ikk chhote group vaala parhan-likhan da program sujha rahi haan: panj bachche, saadi support teacher naal, hafte vich chaar saveran, har vaari teeh mint.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- speaking Punjabi at home is not the cause
- he will not repeat the year
- recommends a small-group literacy programme
- groups of five children
- run by the school's support teacher
- four mornings a week, thirty minutes each session
Terms in this segment- small group — ਛੋਟਾ ਗਰੁੱਪ chhota group
- support teacher — ਸਪੋਰਟ ਟੀਚਰ support teacher
- to recommend / suggest — ਸੁਝਾਉਣਾ sujhauna
Where marks go here: The teacher answers two worries and then makes an offer. Candidates who lead with the programme forget the flat "no, he will not repeat the year", which is the reassurance the parent actually asked for. Four mornings and thirty minutes are separate numbers.
- 6. Mrs GrewalPunjabi English38 words
ih taan changi gall hai. ih program kadon shuru hovega, te ki sanu is de paise dene painge? ikk gall hor. uh raat nu tinn ghante tablet utte gemaan kheda rahinda hai. ki is da vi asar hai?
Model interpretationThat is good to hear. When will this programme start, and will we have to pay for it? One more thing. At night he plays games on the tablet for three hours. Does that have an effect too?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- welcomes the offer
- asks when the programme will start
- asks whether the family has to pay for it
- he plays games on a tablet for three hours at night
- asks whether screen time is a factor as well
Terms in this segment- tablet — ਟੈਬਲੈੱਟ tablet
- to have to pay — ਪੈਸੇ ਦੇਣੇ ਪੈਣਾ paise dene paina
- effect — ਅਸਰ asar
Where marks go here: Three hours is the only number here and it arrives last, after two questions. Candidates who have spent their memory on "when" and "how much" lose it. Note it is three hours a night, not three hours a week.
- 7. Ms BennettEnglish Punjabi39 words
It starts on Monday 17 August and runs for ten weeks, at no cost. Three hours on a tablet is too much on a school night. He should read aloud to you for twenty minutes, five nights a week.
ih somvaar 17 agast nu shuru hovega ate das hafte challega, ate is da koi kharcha nahin hai. school vaali raat nu tinn ghante tablet bahut ziaada hai. us nu hafte vich panj raataan, veeh mint tuhade kol baith ke uchchi aavaaz vich parhna chahida hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- the programme starts on Monday 17 August
- it runs for ten weeks
- there is no cost to the family
- three hours on a tablet is too much on a school night
- he should read aloud to the parent for twenty minutes
- five nights a week
Terms in this segment- at no cost — ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਰਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ koi kharcha nahin
- to read aloud — ਉੱਚੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ uchchi aavaaz vich parhna
Where marks go here: A date, a duration, a cost and two more numbers in under forty words. The most expensive loss is collapsing "twenty minutes, five nights a week" into "twenty minutes a week", which changes the advice completely.
- 8. Mrs GrewalPunjabi English34 words
theek hai madam. asin roti ton baad veeh mint parhaange ate tablet sirf shanivaar aitvaar nu devaange. ki asin dubaara mil sakde haan? main veervaar 22 aktoober nu saadhe tinn vaje aa sakdi haan.
Model interpretationThat is fine, madam. We will read for twenty minutes after dinner and only give him the tablet on Saturday and Sunday. Can we meet again? I can come on Thursday 22 October at half past three.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- agrees to twenty minutes of reading after dinner
- the tablet only on Saturday and Sunday
- asks for a follow-up meeting
- offers Thursday 22 October
- at half past three
Terms in this segment- after dinner — ਰੋਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ roti ton baad
- half past three — ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਵਜੇ saadhe tinn vaje
- again — ਦੁਬਾਰਾ dubaara
Where marks go here: The date and the time are two separate scoreable units. Both "Thursday" and "22 October" must survive, and ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ is 3.30, not 3.00 or 4.00. Assessors mark half-hour slips strictly.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Australian primary schools describe reading with a levelled number and a year-level benchmark. Punjabi has no ready equivalent for that system, so keep "reading level" as a loanword and attach the figure rather than translating it into a vague "standard".
- Teachers are addressed with respect in this community, and the parent's "ਮੈਡਮ" should survive into the English rendering. Use ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions throughout; ਤੂੰ from a teacher to a parent would be a serious register error.
- Many Punjabi parents worry that speaking the home language is holding a child back in English. The teacher's denial is the emotional turning point of this dialogue and must be rendered as a clear "no", not hedged into "maybe it does not matter much".

Car Insurance Renewal: Premium, Excess and Agreed Value
Your brief. Mr Dhillon has phoned his insurer after opening the renewal notice for the comprehensive policy on his car. He is annoyed that the premium has risen when he has never claimed. Rachel Doyle, the consultant, has to explain the increase and walk him through the two things he can change before the policy renews.
Speakers: Insurance consultant at a motor insurer (English) and Punjabi-speaking policyholder renewing his car cover (Punjabi). You interpret for both.
- 1. Rachel DoyleEnglish Punjabi37 words
Thanks for holding. Your comprehensive policy on the 2019 Toyota Camry renews on 12 September. The premium is $1,395, up from $1,180 last year. Your no-claim discount has not changed; you are still on our top level.
hold karan layi dhanvaad. tuhadi 2019 Toyota Camry utte comprehensive policy 12 satambar nu renew ho rahi hai. premium $1,395 hai, jo pichhle saal $1,180 si. tuhada no-claim discount nahin badlia, tusin haale vi saade sabh ton uchche darje utte ho.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- thanks the customer for holding
- comprehensive policy on a 2019 Toyota Camry
- the policy renews on 12 September
- this year's premium is $1,395
- last year it was $1,180
- the no-claim discount is unchanged, at the top level
Terms in this segment- premium — ਪ੍ਰੀਮੀਅਮ premium
- to renew — ਰੀਨਿਊ ਹੋਣਾ renew hona
Where marks go here: Two dollar figures one clause apart, plus a date and a car model. Candidates who summarise it as "the premium has gone up by about two hundred" have done the arithmetic for the client and lost both original numbers.
- 2. Mr DhillonPunjabi English34 words
do sau daalar ton vadh da vaadha? main panj saalaan vich ikk vi claim nahin keeta ate na hi koi accident hoya. phir mera premium kiun vadh gaya? mainu ih sasta karvauna paina hai.
Model interpretationAn increase of more than two hundred dollars? I have not made a single claim in five years, and I have not had an accident either. So why has my premium gone up? I need to get this brought down.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the increase is more than two hundred dollars
- no claim at all in five years
- no accident either
- asks why the premium has risen
- says he needs the price brought down
Terms in this segment- increase — ਵਾਧਾ vaadha
- claim — ਕਲੇਮ claim
- accident — ਐਕਸੀਡੈਂਟ accident
Where marks go here: "No claim" and "no accident" are two separate denials, and he says five years, not "a few years". Merging them into "I have never had any trouble" costs two information units at once.
- 3. Rachel DoyleEnglish Punjabi36 words
The rise is across the board: repairs and spare parts cost more. The excess is one thing you can change. It is the amount you pay towards a claim, and yours is $750 at the moment.
ih vaadha saare gaahkaan utte aaya hai, kiunki murammat ate purze mahinge ho gaye han. ikk cheez jo tusin badal sakde ho, uh hai excess. ih uh rakam hai jo claim vele tusin aap paunde ho, ate is vele tuhadi $750 hai.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- the increase applies to all customers, not just him
- repairs and spare parts cost more
- the excess is one thing he can change
- the excess is what the customer pays towards a claim
- his excess is currently $750
Terms in this segment- excess — ਐਕਸੈੱਸ excess
- spare parts — ਪੁਰਜ਼ੇ purze
- repairs — ਮੁਰੰਮਤ murammat
Where marks go here: "Excess" has no everyday Punjabi word. Candidates who invent a literal translation, or who keep the $750 but skip the one-line definition, strip out the explanation that the rest of the call depends on.
- 4. Mr DhillonPunjabi English35 words
yaani je main excess vadha diaan taan premium ghat javega? kinna ku ghatega? mere dost ne vi ihi keeta si. par accident vaale din mainu saari rakam aapni jeb vichon deni pavegi, theek hai na?
Model interpretationSo if I raise the excess, the premium comes down? By how much would it come down? My friend did the same thing. But on the day of an accident I would have to pay the whole amount out of my own pocket, is that right?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- checks that raising the excess lowers the premium
- asks by how much it would fall
- mentions that his friend did the same
- on the day of an accident he pays the whole amount himself
- asks the consultant to confirm
Terms in this segment- amount / sum — ਰਕਮ rakam
- out of my own pocket — ਆਪਣੀ ਜੇਬ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ aapni jeb vichon
- to come down / reduce — ਘਟਣਾ ghatna
Where marks go here: This is a conditional followed by a confirmation tag. Rendering it as a decision ("I will raise the excess") instead of a question moves the decision from client to interpreter, and the closing "is that right?" is itself scoreable.
- 5. Rachel DoyleEnglish Punjabi35 words
Yes. Raise it from $750 to $1,250 and you save about $150 a year. You must pay that excess before we start repairs. The other choice on your renewal is agreed value or market value.
jee haan. je tusin is nu $750 ton vadha ke $1,250 kar dio taan saal da takreeban $150 bach javega. murammat shuru karan ton pahilan tuhanu uh excess dena pavega. tuhade renewal utte dooji chon hai agreed value jaan market value.
What must survive (5 marks of information)- confirms that it works
- raising the excess from $750 to $1,250
- saves about $150 a year
- he must pay the excess before repairs start
- the other choice is agreed value or market value
Terms in this segment- to save — ਬਚਣਾ bachna
- choice / option — ਚੋਣ chon
- agreed value — ਐਗਰੀਡ ਵੈਲਿਊ agreed value
Where marks go here: Three dollar figures in one short segment, and the saving is approximate. Dropping "about" from $150, or reporting the saving as though it were the new premium, are the two errors assessors see most often here.
- 6. Mr DhillonPunjabi English33 words
haan, excess $1,250 kar dio. hun dooji gall samjhaao. chitthi vich agreed value $19,000 likhi hai, par mere guandhi da kahina hai ki market value sasti paindi hai. mainu kihri laini chahidi hai?
Model interpretationYes, put the excess up to $1,250. Now explain the second thing. The letter has agreed value of $19,000 written on it, but my neighbour says market value works out cheaper. Which one should I take?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- instructs them to raise the excess to $1,250
- asks for the second option to be explained
- the letter shows an agreed value of $19,000
- his neighbour says market value is cheaper
- asks which one he should take
Terms in this segment- market value — ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਵੈਲਿਊ market value
- neighbour — ਗੁਆਂਢੀ guandhi
- letter / notice — ਚਿੱਠੀ chitthi
Where marks go here: $1,250 and $19,000 sit two clauses apart and get swapped. The neighbour's opinion is reported speech, not the client's own view; presenting it as fact misrepresents him and loses the attribution.
- 7. Rachel DoyleEnglish Punjabi39 words
Agreed value fixes your payout at $19,000 if the car is written off or stolen. Market value pays what it is worth on that day, which may be less. Roadside assistance is included either way, at no extra cost.
agreed value vich tuhadi milan vaali rakam $19,000 pakki ho jaandi hai, je gaddi poori kharaab ho jaave jaan chori ho jaave. market value vich us din di keemat mildi hai, jo ghatt vi ho sakdi hai. roadside assistance dovaan vich binaan vaadhu kharche de shaamal hai.
What must survive (6 marks of information)- agreed value fixes the payout at $19,000
- it applies if the car is written off or stolen
- market value pays what the car is worth on that day
- that amount may be less
- roadside assistance is included with either option
- at no extra cost
Terms in this segment- written off — ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖ਼ਰਾਬ poori tarhaan kharaab
- payout / amount paid — ਮਿਲਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਰਕਮ milan vaali rakam
- at no extra cost — ਬਿਨਾਂ ਵਾਧੂ ਖ਼ਰਚੇ ਦੇ binaan vaadhu kharche de
Where marks go here: "Written off or stolen" are two triggers, not one, and "may be less" is a hedge. Upgrading it to "will be less" turns a neutral explanation into financial advice the insurer never gave.

phir main agreed value hi rakhaanga te excess $1,250 kar dio. navaan certificate 12 satambar ton pahilan email kar dena. roadside vich towing, battery, puncture tyre ate gaddi vich band hoian chaabian aa jaandian han na?
Model interpretationThen I will keep agreed value, and please change the excess to $1,250. Email me the new certificate before 12 September. Roadside covers towing, the battery, a punctured tyre and keys locked inside the car, doesn't it?
What must survive (5 marks of information)- chooses agreed value
- asks for the excess to be changed to $1,250
- wants the new certificate emailed before 12 September
- lists towing, battery, punctured tyre and keys locked in the car
- asks the consultant to confirm the roadside cover
Terms in this segment- roadside assistance — ਰੋਡਸਾਈਡ ਅਸਿਸਟੈਂਸ roadside assistance
- towing — ਟੋਇੰਗ towing
- punctured tyre — ਪੰਕਚਰ ਟਾਇਰ puncture tyre
Where marks go here: Four roadside items in a row. Candidates typically deliver three and drop the keys locked in the car, and the closing tag question flattens into a statement, which loses the request for confirmation.
Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue
- Excess, agreed value and market value are Australian motor-insurance products with no clean Punjabi equivalent. Keep the English labels and render the explanation around them; a candidate who translates all three into ordinary words leaves the assessor with nothing to tick.
- Use ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions on a call like this. The consultant is not a friend, and although Mr Dhillon is frustrated, his register stays firm rather than rude, so the English rendering should be assertive without sounding aggressive.
- Punjabi speakers routinely use loanwords such as ਕਲੇਮ, ਪ੍ਰੀਮੀਅਮ and ਪਾਲਿਸੀ in insurance conversations. Reaching for a Sanskritised alternative sounds artificial and, worse, may not be understood by the client the interpreter is supposedly serving.

Marking yourself is the slow way
It works, and it is free — but it takes twenty minutes per dialogue and it depends on you being honest about what you actually said. Inside the course you record your answer, and it is transcribed and scored against the model automatically, segment by segment, with the information you dropped highlighted. 112 dialogues across every CCL domain, unlimited scored mock tests, and a vocabulary bank that resurfaces the terms you keep missing.
No card to start. The free papers here stay free either way.
Questions about this mock test
- Are school and insurance dialogues really this number-heavy in the CCL test?
- Yes. NAATI writes marking segments around retrievable facts, and school and insurance scenarios are dense with them: a reading level, a start date, a premium, an excess. This paper carries a benchmark, two meeting dates and six dollar figures precisely because that is the shape of the real thing.
- Do I translate a reading level number like level 24, or keep it in English?
- Keep the number exactly as spoken and keep the term "reading level" as a loanword. Australian schools use a levelled system with no Punjabi equivalent, so translating it into a general word for standard and losing the figure costs you the information unit the assessor is listening for.
- How should I interpret the word excess in an Australian car insurance policy?
- Say the English word and gloss it once, along the lines of the amount you pay yourself towards a claim before the insurer pays the rest. There is no everyday Punjabi equivalent, and inventing a literal translation leaves the client unable to follow the rest of the conversation about raising it.
- Should I convert dollar amounts into rupees or into lakhs?
- Never. Interpret $1,395 as $1,395. Converting currency, rounding to a lakh, or turning $1,180 into a comparison the speaker did not make all count as added or distorted information, and the assessor deducts for it even when your arithmetic is correct.
- What is the difference between agreed value and market value on a car policy?
- Agreed value fixes the payout amount when you take out the policy, so a write-off or theft pays that figure. Market value pays whatever the car is worth on the day of the claim, which can be lower. In this dialogue the interpreter must keep both definitions distinct rather than blending them.
- How many marks does one wrong dollar figure cost me?
- Each segment is marked against its information units, so a swapped or dropped figure costs that unit rather than the whole segment. The danger in this paper is compounding: swap the excess and the premium and you can lose two units in one breath, which is where a comfortable pass turns into a borderline one.
