Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 9: A Mental Health Treatment Plan and Starting a Small Business

We built this paper around the two things candidates avoid practising. The first dialogue asks you to stay in the first person while a man describes five months of broken sleep, weight loss and shame, and to hold a clinician's may/must distinction about confidentiality. The second buries four Australian tax acronyms and six numbers in 300 words. Sitting it tells you whether your Punjabi survives emotion and whether your English survives the ATO.

What this paper is built to expose

Advanced — legal, clinical or financial terminology under load. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.

Sit the test

Model answers stay hidden until each dialogue is finished. Afterwards you mark yourself against 84 individual information units and the same 36-plus-9 split NAATI uses. The full transcript is further down the page whenever you want it — but read it before you sit, and the number stops meaning anything.

Sit it properly

16 segments. Two dialogues. One take.

This runner keeps every model answer hidden until you finish a dialogue — the full transcript is further down the page, and reading it first is the one thing that makes your score meaningless. Interpret every segment out loud, as if someone is waiting for the meaning. Then mark yourself against the real criteria: 36 marks for accuracy, 9 for language quality, per dialogue.

Free, no account, nothing to install. Your score is saved on this device only.

Before you start

  • Speak, do not think it
Interpreting silently is a different skill from producing sound under pressure.
  • Do not pause the segment
The real test does not wait. Pausing turns a measurement into a rehearsal.
  • Record yourself if you can
Your phone's voice memo app is enough. It is the only way to hear your own hesitations.
  • Mark harshly
An assessor who has never met you certainly will.

How this mock test is scored

NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.

36
Accuracy of information

Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.

9
Language quality and delivery

Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.

The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant health & medical dialogue cannot rescue a weak small business one. How CCL scoring really works.

Full transcript with model answers

Both dialogues in full: the source speech, the model interpretation in Gurmukhi with transliteration, the information units an assessor is counting, and the specific error each segment tends to produce.

Mental Health Treatment Plan at the GP

8 segments312 words of source speech41 scoreable information units45 marks

Your brief. Mr Jagdeep Dhaliwal, a 41-year-old warehouse worker in Craigieburn, has come back to his GP after five months of broken sleep, weight loss and low mood. Dr Nolan wants to prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan so that Medicare will subsidise sessions with a psychologist. Mr Dhaliwal is worried about who will find out. You are the interpreter in the consulting room.

Speakers: General practitioner (Dr Nolan) (English) and Punjabi-speaking patient (Mr Dhaliwal) (Punjabi). You interpret for both.

  1. 1. Dr NolanEnglish Punjabi40 words

Thank you for coming in. From what you have told me, the poor sleep, the low appetite and the flat mood have been going on for about five months. I would like to prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan today.

    Model interpretation

aaun layi dhanvaad. jo tusin mainu dassia hai, us mutaabak neend di kharaabi, bhukh da ghatt hona ate man da udaas rehna takreeban panj mahinian ton chall riha hai. main ajj tuhade layi mental health treatment plan banauna chahunda haan.

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • thanks him for coming in
    • poor sleep
    • low appetite
    • flat or low mood
    • about five months, not weeks
    • wants to prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan today
    Terms in this segment
    • sleep ਨੀਂਦ neend
    • appetite ਭੁੱਖ bhukh
    • Mental Health Treatment Plan ਮੈਂਟਲ ਹੈਲਥ ਟਰੀਟਮੈਂਟ ਪਲਾਨ mental health treatment plan

Where marks go here: Three separate symptoms are listed and candidates collapse them into one phrase like "ਤੁਸੀਂ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ", losing two scoreable units. "Mental Health Treatment Plan" is the name of a Medicare document; describing it as "ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ" makes it sound like treatment rather than paperwork and the assessor marks the term down.

  2. 2. Mr DhaliwalPunjabi English38 words

jee haan daakatar saahab. main raat nu tinn vaje jaag jaanda haan ate phir neend nahin aaundi. chhe killo bhaar ghatt gaya hai. main gurduaare jaana vi chhadd ditta hai, par mainu dar hai ki lok ki kehanage.

    Model interpretation

Yes, doctor. I wake up at three in the morning and then I cannot get back to sleep. I have lost six kilos. I have even stopped going to the gurdwara, but I am afraid of what people will say.

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • confirms what the doctor has said
    • wakes at three in the morning
    • cannot get back to sleep
    • has lost six kilos
    • has stopped going to the gurdwara
    • afraid of what people will say
    Terms in this segment
    • to wake up ਜਾਗਣਾ jaagna
    • weight ਭਾਰ bhaar
    • what people will say ਲੋਕ ਕੀ ਕਹਿਣਗੇ lok ki kehanage

Where marks go here: "ਤਿੰਨ ਵਜੇ" and "ਛੇ ਕਿੱਲੋ" sit two clauses apart and routinely get merged or swapped. The last clause is the emotional core of the whole dialogue; rendering it as "he is embarrassed" breaks first person and softens community judgement into private feeling, which is a distortion, not a paraphrase.

  3. 3. Dr NolanEnglish Punjabi40 words

What you tell me stays in your file at this clinic. I may not share it with your family or your employer without your written consent. But I must break that confidentiality if I believe someone is in serious danger.

    Model interpretation

jo tusin mainu dasde ho, uh is clinic vich tuhadi file vich hi rehnda hai. tuhadi likhti sehmati ton binaan main ih tuhade parivaar jaan tuhade maalak naal saanjha nahin kar sakda. par je mainu lagge ki kise nu gambheer khatra hai, taan mainu ih guptata torhni pavegi.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • notes stay in his file at this clinic
    • may not be shared with family
    • may not be shared with his employer
    • written consent is required, not just verbal
    • confidentiality must be broken if someone is in serious danger
    Terms in this segment
    • confidentiality ਗੁਪਤਤਾ guptata
    • written consent ਲਿਖਤੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ likhti sehmati
    • employer ਮਾਲਕ maalak

Where marks go here: This is the segment the may/must distinction is built on. Candidates render both modals with the same strength, so "I may not share" and "I must break" come out as one flat "ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਾਂਗਾ". That loses the doctor's legal obligation entirely. "Written consent" reduced to "ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ" drops the qualifier that makes it scoreable.

  4. 4. Mr DhaliwalPunjabi English38 words

daakatar saahab, manovigyani kol ja ke hunda ki hai? sirf gallbaat hi hundi hai jaan davaayi vi dinde han? saade bhaichaare vich lok sochde han ki ih sirf paagal bandian layi hunda hai. mainu kinnian mulaakaataan lainian painagian?

    Model interpretation

Doctor, what actually happens when you go to a psychologist? Is it only talking, or do they give medication as well? In our community people think it is only for mad people. How many appointments would I have to have?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • asks what actually happens at a psychologist
    • asks whether it is only talking
    • asks whether medication is given as well
    • in our community people think it is only for mad people
    • asks how many appointments he would need
    Terms in this segment
    • psychologist ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ manovigyani
    • community ਭਾਈਚਾਰਾ bhaichaara
    • appointment ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ mulaakaat

Where marks go here: Candidates sanitise "ਪਾਗਲ" into "people with problems" to be polite. The stigma is exactly what the GP needs to hear, and softening it removes the information unit. It is also attributed to the community, not to himself; rendering it as his own belief reverses the speaker's position.

  5. 5. Dr NolanEnglish Punjabi40 words

A psychologist uses talking therapy, not medication. The plan covers up to six sessions to begin with. If those six are helping you, I review you and refer you for up to four more, making ten in a calendar year.

    Model interpretation

manovigyani gallbaat raahin ilaaj karda hai, davaayi nahin dinda. is plan vich pahilan vadh ton vadh chhe session milde han. je ih chhe session tuhanu faaida kar rahe hon, taan main tuhanu dubaara dekh ke vadh ton vadh chaar hor sessionaan layi bhej sakda haan, yaani ik calendar saal vich kull das.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • talking therapy, not medication
    • up to six sessions to begin with
    • the GP reviews him after that first block
    • if the six are helping, then up to four more
    • ten sessions in one calendar year
    Terms in this segment
    • session ਸੈਸ਼ਨ session
    • to refer ਅੱਗੇ ਭੇਜਣਾ agge bhejna
    • calendar year ਕੈਲੰਡਰ ਸਾਲ calendar saal

Where marks go here: Three numbers and a conditional in one segment. "Up to six" becomes a promise of six when candidates drop the cap, and the review turns into an optional extra instead of the condition that unlocks the next four. "Calendar year" is not the financial year, and rendering it as "ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਾਲ" is a factual error.

  6. 6. Mr DhaliwalPunjabi English38 words

mere layi kharcha vaddi gall hai, kiunki mere kamm de ghante ghatt gaye han. ate meri angrezi eni changi nahin ki main aapne dil di gall khullh ke dass sakaan. ki koi punjabi bolan vaala mil sakda hai?

    Model interpretation

Cost is a big issue for me, because my work hours have been cut. And my English is not good enough for me to speak openly about what is in my heart. Is there someone who speaks Punjabi?

What must survive (4 marks of information)
    • cost is a major concern for him
    • his work hours have been cut
    • his English is not good enough to speak openly
    • asks whether a Punjabi speaker is available
    Terms in this segment
    • cost, expense ਖ਼ਰਚਾ kharcha
    • work hours ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਘੰਟੇ kamm de ghante
    • to speak openly ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਦੱਸਣਾ khullh ke dassna

Where marks go here: "ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ" is idiomatic; a literal "matter of the heart" sounds cardiac in a medical room and an assessor hears a false symptom. The causal link matters too: the hours were cut, therefore cost is a problem. Two unlinked statements lose the reasoning the GP is responding to.

  7. 7. Dr NolanEnglish Punjabi39 words

The clinic we refer to charges $180 a session and Medicare rebates about $98, so you would be around $82 out of pocket. There is a Punjabi-speaking psychologist in Craigieburn, or we can book an interpreter at no cost.

    Model interpretation

jis clinic vich asin bhejde haan, uh ik session de $180 lainde han ate medicare takreeban $98 vaapas dinda hai, so tuhadi aapni jeb vichon lagbhag $82 jaanage. Craigieburn vich ik punjabi bolan vaala manovigyani hai, jaan asin mufat dubhaashia book kar sakde haan.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • the clinic charges $180 a session
    • Medicare rebates about $98
    • around $82 out of pocket
    • a Punjabi-speaking psychologist in Craigieburn is one option
    • or an interpreter can be booked at no cost
    Terms in this segment
    • out of pocket ਆਪਣੀ ਜੇਬ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ aapni jeb vichon
    • interpreter ਦੁਭਾਸ਼ੀਆ dubhaashia

Where marks go here: Three dollar figures in one breath, and the third is the difference between the first two. Candidates report the gap as the fee, or drop the rebate and leave the patient believing he pays $180. The two language options are alternatives, not a package; joining them with "ਅਤੇ" tells the patient he gets both.

  8. 8. Mr DhaliwalPunjabi English39 words

theek hai, main Craigieburn vaale punjabi manovigyani kol jaana pasand karaanga. main aapni patni nu dass diaanga, par baaki parivaar nu nahin. ki main chhe session poore hon ton baad tuhanu milan aavaan? ate ki plan ajj ban javega?

    Model interpretation

All right, I would prefer to go to the Punjabi-speaking psychologist in Craigieburn. I will tell my wife, but not the rest of the family. Should I come and see you once the six sessions are finished? And will the plan be done today?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • chooses the Punjabi-speaking psychologist in Craigieburn
    • will tell his wife
    • will not tell the rest of the family
    • asks whether to return after the six sessions
    • asks whether the plan will be completed today
    Terms in this segment
    • wife ਪਤਨੀ patni
    • the rest of the family ਬਾਕੀ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ baaki parivaar
    • to prefer ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਨਾ pasand karna

Where marks go here: The contrast between the wife and the rest of the family is the entire point of the segment, and a rushed "I will tell my family" reverses the patient's disclosure decision. An assessor treats that as a distortion, which costs more than a plain omission would.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • Mental illness carries heavy stigma in many Punjabi families, and ਪਾਗਲ is the word community members actually use. When the patient reports that stigma, render it at full strength in the first person. Softening it to "people misunderstand" protects nobody and deletes the very information the GP is trying to address.
  • Punjabi has no settled everyday equivalent for counselling, therapy or psychologist. ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ is correct but bookish, and ਸਲਾਹ-ਮਸ਼ਵਰਾ suggests advice rather than treatment. The workable strategy is to borrow the English term and attach one short functional phrase, for example "counselling, ਯਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਲਾਜ", and then use the borrowed word consistently.
  • Keep ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout and let the patient's ਡਾਕਟਰ ਸਾਹਬ stand. The pull towards a reporting frame is strongest on emotionally loaded lines, so guard against "ਉਹ ਕਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਘਟ ਗਿਆ". First person is not a stylistic preference here; the assessor scores the shift itself.

Setting Up a Home Catering Business

8 segments300 words of source speech43 scoreable information units45 marks

Your brief. Mrs Harjit Gill wants to start a small Punjabi catering business from her home kitchen in Blacktown, cooking for family functions at weekends. She has come to a suburban accountant, Ms Beattie, to work out how to register the business, whether she has to charge GST, and what the tax office will expect from her in the first year. You are the interpreter.

Speakers: Accountant (Ms Beattie) (English) and Punjabi-speaking client (Mrs Gill) (Punjabi). You interpret for both.

  1. 1. Ms BeattieEnglish Punjabi39 words

There are two common structures. As a sole trader you and the business are the same person, so you are personally liable for its debts. A company is separate, but costs about $600 to register plus an annual fee.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • two common structures
    • as a sole trader you and the business are the same person
    • personally liable for the business debts
    • a company is a separate entity
    • about $600 to register a company
    • plus an annual fee
    Terms in this segment

Where marks go here: "Personally liable" is the whole reason the accountant is drawing the comparison, and "ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪੈਸੇ ਦੇਣੇ ਪੈਣਗੇ" is not strong enough. Candidates also merge the two company costs into a single $600, dropping the recurring annual fee, which is a separate scoreable unit.

  2. 2. Mrs GillPunjabi English38 words

    Model interpretation

I want to start from home, just two or three orders a week. My husband has a full time job. I cannot afford the cost of a company. What do I need in order to start legally?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • wants to start from home
    • two or three orders a week
    • her husband has a full time job
    • cannot afford the cost of a company
    • asks what is needed to start legally
    Terms in this segment
    • order ਆਰਡਰ order
    • full time job ਪੂਰੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ poore samen di naukri

Where marks go here: "ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਜਾਂ ਤਿੰਨ" is a range, and flattening it to "a few orders" loses a number the accountant later uses to estimate turnover. "ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ" is what makes this a question about registration rather than about cooking; dropping it changes what she is asking.

  3. 3. Ms BeattieEnglish Punjabi36 words

Where marks go here: Candidates who do not know the ABR invent an office name or substitute Centrelink or myGov. Say the name in English. The two documents she must have on hand, tax file number and photo ID, are separate items; "ਕਾਗਜ਼" covers neither.

    • GST ਜੀ. GST
    • ten per cent ਦਸ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ das pratishat
    • sales, turnover ਵਿਕਰੀ vikri

Where marks go here: The ten per cent and the forty thousand are different kinds of number, a rate and an amount, and candidates who are counting rather than listening swap them. The claim is attributed to her cousin, not asserted as fact; dropping "ਮੇਰੇ ਚਚੇਰੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ" makes her sound certain and the accountant's correction then lands oddly.

You must register for GST once your turnover reaches $75,000 in a twelve month period. Below that you may register voluntarily, but you do not have to. Once registered you add ten per cent and lodge a BAS quarterly.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • registration is compulsory at $75,000 turnover
    • measured over a twelve month period
    • below the threshold registration is voluntary
    • she does not have to register now
    • once registered she adds ten per cent
    • a BAS is lodged every quarter

    • compulsory ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ laazmi
    • BAS (Business Activity Statement) ਬੀ.ਏ. BAS
    • quarter ਤਿਮਾਹੀ timaahi

Where marks go here: This segment turns on must versus may. Candidates who use ਪਵੇਗਾ for both make voluntary registration sound compulsory and send the client off to register at forty thousand dollars. The threshold is turnover over twelve months, not a calendar year balance and not profit.

    Model interpretation

One more thing. I buy my supplies with cash at the vegetable market and I throw the dockets away. What can I claim as an expense? And do I have to pay the tax in one lump sum at the end of the year?

What must survive (4 marks of information)
    • buys supplies with cash at the vegetable market
    • throws the dockets away

    Terms in this segment
    • cash ਨਕਦ nakad
    • supplies, goods ਸਮਾਨ samaan
    • to claim as an expense

Where marks go here: The cash habit and the discarded dockets are two separate admissions and the accountant answers both; candidates who compress them to "I pay cash" lose the receipts point. Do not tidy up her position either. She is telling the accountant she has no records, and softening that to "sometimes" is interpreting on her behalf.

Ingredients, packaging and containers are deductible, but a purchase with no receipt is not. Your September quarter BAS is due on 28 October, and after your first tax return the ATO will move you onto quarterly PAYG instalments.

ਏ. PAYG kishtaan
    • ATO, tax office ਏ. ATO, tax daftar

Where marks go here: Four pieces of tax machinery in thirty-eight words. The date 28 October attaches to the September quarter, not to the tax return, and candidates who let the two clauses blur produce a deadline for the wrong document. PAYG instalments are prepayments of income tax, so calling them "ਵਾਧੂ ਟੈਕਸ" invents a second tax that does not exist.

    Model interpretation

All right. I will apply for the ABN this week, open a separate bank account and keep all the receipts in one file. Can I make an appointment with you in October, before I lodge my first BAS?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • will apply for the ABN this week
    • will open a separate bank account
    • will keep all receipts in one file
    • asks for an appointment in October
    • wants it before she lodges her first BAS
    Terms in this segment
    • to apply ਅਰਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਣੀ arzi deni
    • separate bank account ਵੱਖਰਾ ਬੈਂਕ ਖਾਤਾ vakhra bank khaata
    • to lodge (a form)

Where marks go here: Three commitments in one sentence and candidates deliver two. The ordering matters as well: the appointment is requested before the first BAS is lodged, so rendering it as "after I lodge" reverses the sequence and an assessor scores that as a distortion of the client's instruction.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • Almost nothing in this dialogue has a Punjabi equivalent, because ABN, GST, BAS, PAYG and sole trader are names of Australian institutions rather than concepts. Borrow the English term and, the first time only, attach a three or four word functional gloss such as "ਬੀ.ਏ. Inventing a Punjabi coinage leaves the client unable to say the word at the counter, and assessors mark that as an accuracy failure rather than creativity.
  • Punjabi families often run small businesses on informal advice from relatives, and Mrs Gill quoting her cousin is realistic. Interpret the attribution, do not correct it and do not add the accountant's answer early. The interpreter's job is to let the professional discover that the client has been misinformed.
  • Keep ਤੁਸੀਂ in both directions. Ms Beattie is a stranger giving paid advice, and Mrs Gill is an older client, so ਤੂੰ would be jarring in either direction. Note also that ਵਿਕਰੀ and ਮੁਨਾਫ਼ਾ are not interchangeable; the whole GST threshold hangs on which one you say.

Marking yourself is the slow way

It works, and it is free — but it takes twenty minutes per dialogue and it depends on you being honest about what you actually said. Inside the course you record your answer, and it is transcribed and scored against the model automatically, segment by segment, with the information you dropped highlighted. 112 dialogues across every CCL domain, unlimited scored mock tests, and a vocabulary bank that resurfaces the terms you keep missing.

No card to start. The free papers here stay free either way.

Questions about this mock test

Do NAATI CCL dialogues really include mental health topics?
Yes. Health is one of the most frequently drawn domains, and mental health consultations, GP referrals and treatment plans appear regularly. Practising them matters because the vocabulary is not medical so much as institutional, and because staying in the first person is much harder when the content is personal.
How should I interpret "Mental Health Treatment Plan" into Punjabi?
Treat it as the name of a Medicare document rather than a description. Say it in English, in Gurmukhi phrasing as ਮੈਂਟਲ ਹੈਲਥ ਟਰੀਟਮੈਂਟ ਪਲਾਨ, and if the client seems unsure add one short gloss like "ਇੱਕ ਕਾਗਜ਼ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਡੀਕੇਅਰ ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਰਚਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ". Do not invent a Punjabi name for it.
Should I soften it if a client says something like "that is for mad people"?
No. The interpreter renders what was said, at the strength it was said, in the first person. Stigma is information the clinician needs in order to respond to it, and a candidate who tidies ਪਾਗਲ into something gentler has removed a scoreable unit and edited the client's meaning, which assessors treat as a distortion.
Is there a Punjabi word for GST, ABN or BAS?
Not one that anyone uses. ਵਸਤੂ ਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ exists for GST on paper and is never heard in speech. The accepted strategy is to keep the English acronym and add a brief functional explanation the first time it appears, then use the acronym consistently for the rest of the dialogue.
How many psychologist sessions does a Mental Health Treatment Plan cover?
Under the Better Access arrangements a plan gives access to an initial block of up to six subsidised individual sessions, then a GP review, then a referral for up to four more, to a maximum of ten in a calendar year. In this paper the numbers six, four and ten are all separately scoreable.
What do I do if a term like PAYG instalments comes up and I have no idea what it means?
Carry the acronym across untouched rather than guessing at a meaning. An assessor accepts "ਪੀ.ਏ. ਕਿਸ਼ਤਾਂ" from a candidate who clearly does not know the mechanism, but penalises "ਵਾਧੂ ਟੈਕਸ", because that invents a second tax and misinforms the client. A wrong explanation costs more than no explanation.
