Free NAATI CCL Punjabi Mock Test 3: Home Loan Appointment and Childcare Enrolment

We built this paper around money that has to survive the trip into Punjabi. Sit it once and you will know whether you can hold four dollar figures, two percentages and a deadline inside a single thirty five word segment, or whether your rendering quietly rounds them off.

What this paper is built to expose

Intermediate — institutional language and multi-part answers. Every mock test in this library is written around specific, nameable failure points rather than being a random conversation — so the score you get tells you what to fix, not just whether you passed.

Sit the test

Model answers stay hidden until each dialogue is finished. Afterwards you mark yourself against 86 individual information units and the same 36-plus-9 split NAATI uses. The full transcript is further down the page whenever you want it — but read it before you sit, and the number stops meaning anything.

Sit it properly

16 segments. Two dialogues. One take.

This runner keeps every model answer hidden until you finish a dialogue — the full transcript is further down the page, and reading it first is the one thing that makes your score meaningless. Interpret every segment out loud, as if someone is waiting for the meaning. Then mark yourself against the real criteria: 36 marks for accuracy, 9 for language quality, per dialogue.

Free, no account, nothing to install. Your score is saved on this device only.

Before you start

  • Speak, do not think it
Interpreting silently is a different skill from producing sound under pressure.
  • Do not pause the segment
The real test does not wait. Pausing turns a measurement into a rehearsal.
  • Record yourself if you can
Your phone's voice memo app is enough. It is the only way to hear your own hesitations.
  • Mark harshly
An assessor who has never met you certainly will.

How this mock test is scored

NAATI marks each CCL dialogue out of 45, split into two things that are assessed separately. The self-marking above mirrors that split exactly, which is what makes the number comparable to a real result rather than a guess.

36
Accuracy of information

Every fact, number, name, qualifier and instruction that has to cross into the other language. Omit one and it is gone; change one and it costs you again, because a distorted fact is worse than a missing one for the person relying on you.

9
Language quality and delivery

Fluency, grammar and vocabulary, and register. This is where two candidates who conveyed identical content end up several marks apart — one sounded like an interpreter, the other sounded like they were guessing.

The rule that catches people: you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 out of 45 on each dialogue. A brilliant banking & finance dialogue cannot rescue a weak education one. How CCL scoring really works.

Full transcript with model answers

Both dialogues in full: the source speech, the model interpretation in Gurmukhi with transliteration, the information units an assessor is counting, and the specific error each segment tends to produce.

Home Loan Appointment: Pre-Approval, Deposit and Rates

8 segments307 words of source speech42 scoreable information units45 marks

Your brief. Mr Sandhu has an appointment with a lending manager at his credit union in Craigieburn. He and his wife want pre-approval before an auction later this month. The lender works through their borrowing capacity, the size of their deposit, Lenders Mortgage Insurance, the difference between a variable and a fixed rate, and the paperwork she needs before she can lodge the file. You are the interpreter.

Speakers: Lending manager at a credit union (English) and Punjabi-speaking first home buyer (Punjabi). You interpret for both.

  1. 1. Ms WhelanEnglish Punjabi39 words

Thanks for coming in. Today we are looking at pre-approval only. That is valid for ninety days, and we usually have an answer within five business days, but it is not a final approval until we value the property.

    Model interpretation

aaun layi dhanvaad. ajj asin sirf pre-approval di gall kar rahe haan. ih nabbe din tak chalda hai, ate sada javaab aam taur te panj kamm vaale dinaan vich aa jaanda hai, par jadon tak asin ghar di keemat nahin lagva lainde, ih pakki manzoori nahin hundi.

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • today is about pre-approval only
    • pre-approval lasts ninety days
    • an answer usually comes within five business days
    • ninety days and five days are two separate periods
    • it is not a final approval
    • final approval waits on a valuation of the property
    Terms in this segment
    • to value a property

Where marks go here: Two time periods sit in one sentence and candidates keep only one, usually the ninety days. The bigger loss is the qualifier at the end: if "not a final approval until we value the property" turns into "the loan is approved", the whole segment reverses meaning.

  2. 2. Mr SandhuPunjabi English39 words

asin bavanja hazaar daalar jorh laye han. jihrhe ghar sanu Craigieburn vich pasand han, uh chhe lakh chali hazaar de nerhe han. meri patni ate main doven kamm karde haan. dasso, asin ral ke kinna karza lai sakde haan?

    Model interpretation

We have saved fifty two thousand dollars. The houses we like in Craigieburn are close to six hundred and forty thousand. My wife and I both work. How much can we borrow together?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • savings of fifty two thousand dollars
    • houses in Craigieburn
    • priced near six hundred and forty thousand
    • both husband and wife are working
    • asks the combined borrowing amount
    Terms in this segment
    • to save up ਜੋੜਨਾ jorhna
    • loan ਕਰਜ਼ਾ karza
    • one lakh (100,000) ਇੱਕ ਲੱਖ ikk lakh

Where marks go here: ਛੇ ਲੱਖ ਚਾਲੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ is six hundred and forty thousand, not six hundred and four thousand or six point four million. Candidates who convert lakhs on the fly lose a digit here, and a wrong purchase price contaminates every figure that follows.

  3. 3. Ms WhelanEnglish Punjabi39 words

On your combined income of one hundred and twenty four thousand, you could borrow about five hundred and twenty thousand. But your credit card limit of fifteen thousand counts as fully spent, and that takes roughly sixty thousand off.

    Model interpretation

tuhadi dovaan di ralvin aamdan ikk lakh chauvi hazaar hai, is hisaab naal tusin lagbhag panj lakh veeh hazaar daalar da karza lai sakde ho. par tuhade credit card di pandraan hazaar vaali limit poori kharchi hoyi gini jaandi hai, ate is naal takreeban satth hazaar ghatt jaanda hai.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • combined income of one hundred and twenty four thousand
    • could borrow about five hundred and twenty thousand
    • credit card limit is fifteen thousand
    • the limit counts as fully spent, not the balance
    • borrowing power drops by roughly sixty thousand
    Terms in this segment

Where marks go here: Three different money figures land in four clauses and the third one is the trap: the bank counts the limit, not what is owed. Rendering it as "your credit card debt" loses the whole point of the segment and the sixty thousand that follows from it.

  4. 4. Mr SandhuPunjabi English38 words

ih taan hairaani vaali gall hai. main uh card mushkal naal vartda haan, us utte sirf chaar sau daalar bakaaya hai. main limit tinn hazaar karva sakda haan. dooji gall, ki sade bavanja hazaar peshgi layi kaafi han?

    Model interpretation

That is surprising. I hardly use that card; there is only four hundred dollars owing on it. I can have the limit reduced to three thousand. Secondly, is our fifty two thousand enough for a deposit?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • he is surprised by the credit card rule
    • the card is barely used
    • only four hundred dollars owing
    • offers to reduce the limit to three thousand
    • asks whether fifty two thousand is enough deposit
    Terms in this segment
    • balance owing ਬਕਾਇਆ bakaaya
    • deposit (on a house) ਪੇਸ਼ਗੀ ਰਕਮ peshgi rakam
    • hardly, with difficulty ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ mushkal naal

Where marks go here: "ਚਾਰ ਸੌ" (four hundred owing) and "ਤਿੰਨ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ" (the new limit) do different jobs and are two marks. Candidates who compress them into "a small amount" also lose the offer to act, which is what the lender responds to later.

  5. 5. Ms WhelanEnglish Punjabi38 words

Fifty two thousand is just over eight per cent of the price. Any deposit under twenty per cent brings in Lenders Mortgage Insurance, which on this loan is about eighteen thousand dollars. It protects the bank, not you.

    Model interpretation

bavanja hazaar keemat da atth feesdi ton thorha jiha vadh banda hai. je peshgi rakam veeh feesdi ton ghatt hove taan laindarz mortgage insurance lagg jaandi hai, jo is karze utte takreeban athaaran hazaar daalar banegi. ih bank nu bachaundi hai, tuhanu nahin.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • fifty two thousand is just over eight per cent
    • the threshold is a twenty per cent deposit
    • under twenty per cent triggers Lenders Mortgage Insurance
    • about eighteen thousand dollars on this loan
    • it protects the bank, not the borrower
    Terms in this segment
    • Lenders Mortgage Insurance ਲੈਂਡਰਜ਼ ਮੌਰਗੇਜ ਇੰਸ਼ੋਰੈਂਸ laindarz mortgage insurance
    • per cent ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ feesdi

Where marks go here: Eight per cent and twenty per cent are not interchangeable: one is what they have, one is the line they fall under. The last clause is a whole mark on its own, and candidates who say the insurance "protects you if you cannot pay" score zero for it and mislead the client.

  6. 6. Mr SandhuPunjabi English39 words

athaaran hazaar bahut vaddi rakam hai, par veeh feesdi jorhan layi asin hor saal udeek nahin kar sakde. sade guaandhi ne do saal layi viaaj dar pakki karva layi hai. sanu pakki dar laini chahidi hai jaan badalan vaali?

    Model interpretation

Eighteen thousand is a very large amount, but we cannot wait another year to save the twenty per cent. Our neighbour has fixed his interest rate for two years. Should we take a fixed rate or a variable one?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • eighteen thousand is a lot for them
    • they cannot wait another year to reach twenty per cent
    • the neighbour fixed his rate
    • the neighbour fixed it for two years
    • asks fixed or variable
    Terms in this segment

Where marks go here: The neighbour's two years is a fact about the neighbour, not a request for a two year fixed loan; candidates who blur the two make the client sound as though he has already decided. The refusal to wait "another year" is also scoreable and often disappears.

  7. 7. Ms WhelanEnglish Punjabi38 words

You may keep the card, but you must drop the limit to three thousand before we lodge the file. Our variable rate is five point eight nine per cent; the two year fixed is five point six four.

    Model interpretation

tusin card rakh sakde ho, par file bhejan ton pahilan tuhanu limit ghata ke tinn hazaar karvauni hi pavegi. sadi badalan vaali dar panj point atth naun feesdi hai; do saal vaali pakki dar panj point chhe chaar hai.

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • he may keep the card
    • he must reduce the limit to three thousand
    • the reduction must happen before the file is lodged
    • variable rate is five point eight nine per cent
    • two year fixed rate is five point six four per cent
    Terms in this segment
    • to lodge a file ਫ਼ਾਈਲ ਭੇਜਣੀ file bhejni
    • to reduce the limit ਲਿਮਿਟ ਘਟਾਉਣੀ limit ghatauni
    • point (decimal) ਪੁਆਇੰਟ point

Where marks go here: "You may keep" and "you must drop" are a permission and an obligation in one breath; flattening both into ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ costs the modal distinction. The two decimal rates must also stay attached to the right product, and the timing (before lodgement) is its own mark.

  8. 8. Mr SandhuPunjabi English37 words

    Model interpretation

I will have the limit reduced to three thousand tomorrow. Tonight I will send my last two payslips, three months of bank statements and my ATO notice of assessment. Our auction is on the twenty first of March.

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • limit reduced tomorrow
    • documents sent tonight
    • last two payslips
    • three months of bank statements
    • ATO notice of assessment
    • the auction is on the twenty first of March
    Terms in this segment
    • payslip ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਪਰਚੀ tankhaah parchi
    • notice of assessment ਨੋਟਿਸ ਆਫ਼ ਅਸੈੱਸਮੈਂਟ notice of assessment
    • auction ਨਿਲਾਮੀ nilaami

Where marks go here: Three document types, each with its own number, plus a date. "Two payslips" and "three months of statements" get swapped or merged into "my papers", and the auction date, which is the only deadline in the dialogue, is often left off the end because the candidate has run out of memory.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • Punjabi speakers count in lakhs, so 640,000 is Do the conversion before you open your mouth; converting mid sentence is where a zero goes missing and a marker hears a different house price.
  • The lender addresses the client as ਤੁਸੀਂ throughout, and so must you. Slipping into ਤੂੰ with a client who is your own age reads as disrespect in a professional setting and will be marked down as a register error, not a style choice.
  • Lenders Mortgage Insurance has no Punjabi equivalent and is routinely misunderstood by clients as cover for themselves. Render the name as it stands and let the lender's own explanation do the correcting; do not add your own clarification.

Long Day Care Enrolment: Waitlist, Subsidy and Immunisation

8 segments302 words of source speech44 scoreable information units45 marks

Your brief. Mrs Dhillon is meeting the director of a long day care centre about a place for her daughter Gurleen, who turns three in April. Mrs Dhillon returns to work in March and needs three days a week. The director covers which days are free, the waitlist, the daily fee, the Child Care Subsidy and the activity test, immunisation requirements and the orientation visits before the first day. You are the interpreter.

Speakers: Director of a long day care centre (English) and Punjabi-speaking mother enrolling her daughter (Punjabi). You interpret for both.

  1. 1. Ms HollingsEnglish Punjabi36 words

Thank you for coming in. We have places for three year olds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Tuesday the third of March. Mondays are full, and there are four families ahead of you on that waitlist.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • places are for three year olds
    • the free days are Tuesdays and Thursdays
    • start date is Tuesday the third of March

    Terms in this segment
    • waitlist ਉਡੀਕ ਸੂਚੀ udeek soochi
    • vacancy, place ਥਾਂ thaan
    • full, booked out ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ bhare hoye

Where marks go here: Two named weekdays are available and a third is not; candidates who render this as "we have some days" lose three marks in one stroke. The four families are a queue position, not four spare places, and reversing that misinforms the parent.

  2. 2. Mrs DhillonPunjabi English37 words

    Model interpretation

My daughter Gurleen turns three on the fourteenth of April. I am going back to work three days a week from March, so we need the Monday as well. How long is the wait likely to be?

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • the daughter's name is Gurleen
    • she turns three on the fourteenth of April
    • the mother returns to work in March
    • she works three days a week
    • they need Monday as the third day

    Terms in this segment
    • daughter ਧੀ dhee
    • to go back to work
    • the wait ਉਡੀਕ udeek

Where marks go here: Three separate numbers ride on the same sentence: turning three, the fourteenth of April, and three days a week. Candidates who have just said "three years old" often say "three days" as "three years" a clause later, which changes the request entirely.

  3. 3. Ms HollingsEnglish Punjabi38 words

I will put Gurleen on the Monday waitlist and ring you the day a place opens. Our fee is one hundred and thirty eight dollars a day. Before she starts we run two orientation visits of one hour.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • Gurleen goes on the Monday waitlist
    • the centre will ring the day a place opens
    • the fee is one hundred and thirty eight dollars
    • that fee is per day, not per week
    • two orientation visits before she starts
    • each visit lasts one hour
    Terms in this segment
    • a place opens up

Where marks go here: The fee is a daily rate; candidates who drop "a day" leave the parent thinking childcare costs $138 a week. "Two visits of one hour" is also two facts, and rendering it as "a visit or two" loses both.

  4. 4. Mrs DhillonPunjabi English37 words

    Model interpretation

One hundred and thirty eight dollars a day is a great deal of money. My husband works full time and I work thirty hours a fortnight. Our combined income is one hundred and ten thousand. How much subsidy would we get?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • the daily fee is too high for them
    • the husband works full time
    • she works thirty hours a fortnight
    • combined income is one hundred and ten thousand
    • asks how much subsidy they would receive
    Terms in this segment
    • full time ਪੂਰਾ ਸਮਾਂ poora samaan
    • fortnight ਦੋ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ do hafte
    • subsidy ਸਬਸਿਡੀ subsidy

Where marks go here: ਦੋ ਹਫ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੀਹ ਘੰਟੇ is thirty hours a fortnight, not thirty hours a week. Halving or doubling it changes the working pattern the director is answering, and the income figure in lakhs must land as 110,000 rather than 11,000.

  5. 5. Ms HollingsEnglish Punjabi38 words

Families earning under about eighty five thousand receive up to ninety per cent, and at your income it is nearer eighty five per cent. Every family now gets seventy two subsidised hours a fortnight, three days of care.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • up to ninety per cent for families earning under about eighty five thousand
    • at their income it is nearer eighty five per cent
    • seventy two subsidised hours a fortnight
    • those hours now go to every family
    • seventy two hours is three days of care
    Terms in this segment
    • to earn ਕਮਾਉਣਾ kamauna

Where marks go here: Eighty five thousand is an income and eighty five is a percentage, and they land one clause apart. A candidate who lets one become the other tells the parent she is getting ninety per cent. The seventy two are hours a fortnight, not days and not dollars.

meri saheli kahindi si ki ghante kise activity test utte nirbhar karde han. ikk hor gall, asin pichhle saal chaar mahine India rahe si ate Gurleen da ikk teeka rah gaya si. ki daakhla ruk javega?

    Model interpretation

My friend said the hours depend on some kind of activity test. One other thing: we were in India for four months last year and Gurleen missed one of her needles. Will that hold up the enrolment?

What must survive (5 marks of information)
    • a friend mentioned an activity test
    • the friend said hours depend on it
    • the family was in India for four months last year
    • Gurleen missed one immunisation
    • asks whether that will stop the enrolment
    Terms in this segment
    • activity test ਐਕਟਿਵਿਟੀ ਟੈਸਟ activity test
    • needle, vaccination ਟੀਕਾ teeka
    • enrolment ਦਾਖ਼ਲਾ daakhla

Where marks go here: This is hearsay and a question, not a statement of the rules; candidates who render it as "the hours depend on the activity test" put the friend's claim in the client's mouth as fact. One missed needle is also not "she has had no vaccinations".

  7. 7. Ms HollingsEnglish Punjabi40 words

That is the activity test, but those seventy two hours now come to every family. Gurleen must be up to date with her needles, or on a catch-up plan from your GP. Send us her immunisation history statement from myGov.

    Model interpretation

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • confirms that is the activity test
    • the seventy two hours now come to every family
    • Gurleen must be up to date with immunisations
    • or be on a catch-up plan from the GP
    • send the immunisation history statement
    • the statement comes from myGov
    Terms in this segment
    • up to date (with vaccinations)
    • catch-up schedule ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਟੀਕੇ ਲਗਵਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਡਿਊਲ rahinde teeke lagvaun da schedule
    • immunisation history statement ਟੀਕਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ teekian da record

Where marks go here: The immunisation rule is an either or, and dropping the catch-up plan turns a workable condition into a refusal. myGov is a proper noun: render it as ਮਾਈਗੌਵ, never as "the government website", or the parent will not know where to look.

    Model interpretation

I will book the doctor this week and bring the immunisation record to the first visit on the twenty fourth of February. Should I send a hat, two sets of spare clothes and a water bottle, or do you provide lunch as well?

What must survive (6 marks of information)
    • she will book the GP this week
    • she will bring the immunisation record
    • the first orientation visit is on the twenty fourth of February
    • asks about a hat and a water bottle
    • two sets of spare clothes
    • asks whether the centre provides lunch
    Terms in this segment
    • spare clothes ਵਾਧੂ ਕੱਪੜੇ vaadhoo kaprhe
    • hat ਟੋਪੀ topi
    • to book an appointment ਸਮਾਂ ਲੈਣਾ samaan laina

Where marks go here: The closing segment is a list plus a date plus a question, and the question is the part candidates lose: if "do you provide lunch" is dropped or turned into a statement, the director has nothing to answer and the parent is left packing food she does not need.

Register and cultural mediation in this dialogue

  • The Child Care Subsidy is paid to the centre and the family pays only the gap, which surprises parents who expect money in their own account. Keep the mechanism as the director states it and resist the urge to explain it in your own words.
  • A centre director speaking to a parent uses ਤੁਸੀਂ, and a Punjabi speaking mother will often use ਜੀ after a title. Carry the respect level across, but do not add honorifics the English speaker never used or invent ਜੀ where there was none.
  • Punjabi families commonly say ਟੀਕਾ for any injection, so "immunisation", "vaccine" and "needle" all land on the same word. When the director distinguishes a missed dose from a catch-up schedule, keep the two ideas separate in your rendering.

Marking yourself is the slow way

It works, and it is free — but it takes twenty minutes per dialogue and it depends on you being honest about what you actually said. Inside the course you record your answer, and it is transcribed and scored against the model automatically, segment by segment, with the information you dropped highlighted. 112 dialogues across every CCL domain, unlimited scored mock tests, and a vocabulary bank that resurfaces the terms you keep missing.

No card to start. The free papers here stay free either way.

Questions about this mock test

How many numbers should I expect in a banking dialogue like this one?
This paper puts eleven separate figures into the home loan dialogue alone: a purchase price, savings, combined income, a borrowing limit, a credit card limit, two percentages, an insurance premium, two interest rates and an auction date. Real CCL banking dialogues are built the same way, because numbers are the easiest thing for an assessor to mark objectively.
Do I convert dollar amounts into lakhs when interpreting into Punjabi?
Yes, if that is how your client would naturally hear it. Six hundred and forty thousand dollars is ਛੇ ਲੱਖ ਚਾਲੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਡਾਲਰ, and saying it that way is good practice, not an addition. What loses marks is a wrong conversion, so do the arithmetic in the pause before you speak rather than out loud mid sentence.
Should Lenders Mortgage Insurance be translated or kept in English?
Keep it. LMI is the name of an Australian product, and a Punjabi paraphrase such as ਬੀਮਾ leaves the client thinking they are the ones being insured. Say ਲੈਂਡਰਜ਼ ਮੌਰਗੇਜ ਇੰਸ਼ੋਰੈਂਸ and let the lender's own sentence, that it protects the bank rather than the borrower, carry the explanation.
Do I need to understand how the Child Care Subsidy actually works to pass?
You do not need to be an expert, but you do need the vocabulary to move fast. If the words subsidy, activity test, subsidised hours, fortnight and immunisation history statement are already in your mouth, you can spend your memory on the numbers in that segment instead of hunting for a word.
What happens if I miss one figure in a segment?
One dropped number is one lost information unit, not a failed dialogue. The danger is the cascade: on this paper the eight per cent deposit explains the LMI, and the LMI explains the next question, so a candidate who drops the percentage often mangles the two segments after it as well.
Is it acceptable to ask the speaker to repeat a long list of documents?
In the real test you may ask for one repetition per dialogue, and the last segment here, with two payslips, three months of statements and a notice of assessment, is exactly the place where candidates spend it. Practise the list until you do not need to, because a repetition costs you time and composure.

Sit another paper

One mock is a data point; two are a trend. Pick a domain you have not practised — a real test will not let you choose.
